    Simplest Weather Sock Ever?

Whipped this up today. Found some lightweight 100% cotton at Walmart in a 120" width. Bought 10' of it and sewed it up on the same theory as my simplest bug net ever.

It was $7.95 a yard and cost $28.75 with tax; I already had the cotton webbing for loops. Looks like the fabric weighs 3.2 ounces per square yard. Altogether it weighs 38 ounces.

It does block the wind. Inside the temp rises significantly. Getting in and out is easy and it can be tied up out of the way during the day. The dangling ends just draw up under the hammock.

Update: added 4 loops on the bottom for staking it out to create a 5x5 foot space out of the weather.

It's on the SRL like a bug net and not over a tarp.

I guess that in extreme cold one would not need a tarp as all the precip would be frozen. Ice and snow knocks off of cotton fairly easily, right?

    Is you're weight calculation correct? 120 in= 10 ft = 3.3 yards.

So you have 11.1 sq yards. If the weight is 38 oz it looks like the material weights around 3.4 oz per sq yard.

Nope. Due to the fact that the sock is retaining your body heat, the fabric itself is warm. And the snow sticks, melts, etc.

Tarp + sock creates microclimates. Always use the two, for most situations. The tarp blocks the wind and snow. Then the sock retains some heat.

Thanks. Yes, but like my simplest bug net ever it merely hangs down and does not gather underneath, which allows for a protected space when things are tied up out of the way:

Thanks for the catch. I misplaced the decimal. Weight of the raw fabric sans loops was 35.4 ounces.

    Thanks, gargoyle.

I'm tempted to try this thing out tonight. It's quite cold here today and will be very cold over night -- a few steps from my back door! LOL
