Yesterday I e-mailed Roanoke River Partners regarding hammock camping. They say that it is OK to use trees near the platforms but some platforms are in swampy areas and it may not be possible in these areas. They said that there are posts on the platforms and these could be used for hammocks. Would they be strong enough? Probably couldn't get too many hammocks on a platform. This sounds like an interesting trip and I'll certainly continue to follow this discussion.

I read there are eye bolts in some of the posts to facilitate hanging a tarp over the platform. Apparently they are not already under cover like the ones on the Suwanee River trail.

So thinking outside the box....would it be possible to have a Turtledog stand that incorporated the hull of the kayak as the ridge pole. All that would have to be paddled in is the tripods. Hmmmmm.

If you go to the platform links there are some hammocks hanging from the poles. I mentioned the turtle dog stand to MM but did not think of using the kayak!

Go to platform links at the RRT link above on first page of this thread. Click on each campsite. You'll see hammocking is not to be a problem at 70 percent of the sites based o the pictures....the 30% gets us down to numbers=how many actually show up for this advanture. Want to limit group size?
And/or lotto system for who gets the limited number of trees at the 30% of sites that are of limited hangability.
Also where we actually start will mean a lot. If we start before the 'Bluffs' or at Hamilton then the site numbers greatly increase....also there are the two other paddling systems Chowan River and Edenton (also on the linked page) offers even more possibilities with even more group camping opporunities.
    Lot's to study.

Interesting trail. But don't ye ferget - there be baars in th'm thar swamps of thee lower Roanoke. Cold'r weather bees the best time and not jest fer the bugs!

Seriously. If you can start above Roanoke Rapids, you get to shoot the rocks if the flows are right. That is if the trail starts that far upriver.

I have a spare 38-inch inner tube from my tractor for use as the poop barge if anyone thinks that would be big enough to handle the load generated by a bunch of strange folks.

Could be up for this one if timing is right. I plan to re-start my AT hike in early April for at least 2 months of trail time, more if I can get free of family stuff.

Thanks for the video, Debbie. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled on this one, but it's been since 2006 that I've done more than an overnight paddle trip. I don't even have half the stuff anymore. Plus, getting off for more than a weekend during that time would be darn tough.
