I have made 1/8 and 7/64 whoopies with amsteel. I haven't found either slipped but now that it is cold I am using straps to connect hammock directly to tree. when we want backpacking and space is the issue 7/64 packs smallest.

From what I have found it looks like ordering from dutchware is the cheapest option for buying amsteel 7/64 especially when calculating in shipping costs (for me in KY atleast) or am I missing something here? Not to mention buying direct from a HF member.

You're right. Dutch beats them on the shipping for the 7/64".

You can't use Dutch whoopie hooks with 1/8 Amsteel - 'nuff said.

Next DIYGS order I'm getting the material to make a suspension kit for the PIF thread - until then I'm out of the PIF game. But thanks for the heads-up!

Redden Marine is also on HF. That is why there is a discount. They also tell us that the shipping calculator gives the wrong number for line so call or email them for a quote. Just pointing out the whole story. I got mine there and it worked well.

You got an answer about why the cost difference. You also got the usual lighter argument. The other side of the coin is safety factor. If all you want to do is hang anything rated a pound over your weight and a perfect hang angle will work. If you want to hang safely you have to use a multiplier for that. Some folks use 5 and some of us use 10. A 250 llb hanger is pushing a 10x safety factor with 1/8 and way over on 3/32. assuming a perfect 30 deg hang angle. You might find one of the hang angle vs stress calculators interesting to see what happens if you are off on your angles. ;-0

Another issue is the length of the bury. It is specified in diameters. If somebody says a 10 inch bury in 3/32 it will be longer in 1/8. Then there is the question of finished length or starting length. A characteristic of hollow braid is that it gets shorter when the diameter is expanded. I made 1/8 whoopee slings with the end measurement that the spec said and had no problems with them. That leaves me thinking folks with slippage problems used the wrong bury length.

FWIW I have no problem splicing or knot tying but I find whoopee slings to be a good example of weight trumping practicality. Straps are easier, faster and less fiddle factor but they weigh a couple of ounces more. Pick your poison.
    YMMV

I also remember reading formulas for buries and the thicker the rope, the longer the bury should be.

I might use a 6" bury with 1/16 Lash-it/Zing-t, but will need least 10" for 7/16 Amsteel Blue. You probably need to go to 14 or 15" with 1/8", but that is only a guess. I don't have the formula in front of me.

Just for accuracy, per Samson Rope's splicing instructions, the bury entrance and exit should be marked at 3.5 fids. A fid is 21 times the rope diameter. This equates to about 8" for 7/64" and 9" for 1/8". The finished buries will be about one inch shorter.
