    Bug net in freezing temperatures?

Hey all, just wanted to check with you experienced folks how you handle the bug net in hammocks such as the WBBB when it´s freezing? Does it trap moisture enough for condensation/icing to be a problem? Or is it the other way around, traps a little bit of heat? In other words, open or closed bugnet or doesn´t it matter?

I use an open hammock in winter. I'd tie it back. Netting will catch your breath.

Netting will cause a "frost shower" or a rain drop one, either way not good.

Open top hammocks for me all cold season also

I have used it far below zero and the netting will catch moisture from breath, and perspiration. Whether that is an issue, depends on the conditions and whether it outweighs other advantages. It does reduce significant airflow creating a warmer environment. This may reduce the condensation on the topmost portion of your quilt. Condensation and freeze still happens on the tarp and the netting will mitigate the flakes falling back on to you. I have had occasions where the netting condensate also flaked back on me. I suppose I was going to get a few flakes on my face regardless that night. Anyway, I have used mine many nights below zero and many more below freezing without an issue.

Last night i forgot to stuff away my bug net and the condensation ice was falling down on my face, it was -15C ( 5 F ) and first real chilly night this far.
No more bug net this winter.

I look forward to when the bugs retire for the season. Any night where there aren't bugs buzzing, my bug netting is stowed away.

Whatever warmth is gained by having the bug netting zipped is outweighed by not wanting to be sealed up in the hammock.

I take the same approach for tarps. If it's not raining, the stakes are set, but the tarp is stowed.

Yes…in freezing it will catch your breath condensation.
I came up with a Frost-Bib to catch the condensation and keep it off of my insulation. It works. I am a still sleeper.

I will probably get 2qzq to do a zipper mod on my under access Hennessy hammock sooner or later. In the mean time, I guess conditions (humidity/dew point) were fine last night. I didn't have any condensation freezing and falling back down on me.

I've noticed that a bug net will, short term, add a few degrees warmth, but at the colder temps where that would be helpful: just as mentioned above, you will get snow or freezing rain inside the hammock, so a plus 1 to open hammock.

The colder it is, the more you will want to snug everything up, paradoxically, the more you cut off ventilation* ie: "snug it up", the greater the chance for getting cold due to condensation & artificial precipitation.

    * Up to a point that is. You do not want the wind flowing free thru your shelter!
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.
