Firewalker & I will be arriving around 1300 on Wed, with the plan to hike to the Summit of Mt Rogers. This will be our 4th attempt, sort of, so wish us luck. After that, we may stay another night up there, or head to the Wise or ??????

I'm mostly packed, but don't know what to put in my backpack as no one seems to know what the weather will be (I've seen at least 3 completely different forecasts for next weekend).

    So, everyone ready?

    Don't forget:
    High energy food.
Water & a way to keep it from freezing.
Extra clothing AND clothes for the trip home.
A full gas tank in the car! We always stop in Damascus & top up before heading into the park!
Extra insulation & / or hot packs for the hammock or tent. Yes, tents are welcome,,, gives us something to point at & laugh.

REMEMBER: the weather may change radically, there is always a chance of rain and or snow! Bring your rain gear, it has rained at the hangout with temps at head level of 17 degrees. Just because it's warm & sunny in Damascus, doesn't mean it will be like that up on the mountain! Stay dry! To stay dry, stay cool: Sweat means wet, wet means COLD!
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.

Looks like James, Eric, and I will probably get dropped off at Massey Gap with the intention to go to the Wise shelter Thursday night. I believe Dutch will stay at the campground..not completely sure of that...but I'm guessing he will want to guard the Dutch Bling!

I'd like to come if the weather doesn't look too bad (apparently what some of you guys live for). I've only tested my insulation down to about 25.

You will want to plan on the likelihood of much colder temps and wind and wet. Remember, closed-cell foam or self-inflating pads are cheap, work very well in a hammock, and are excellent backup if temps exceed your setup or if you need to go to ground. Packing a space blanket sleeping bag is also a good last-ditch plan. Honestly, after last year, I'm planning to either bring a tent or make room to sleep in the van, just in case. Sleeping in the driver's seat was NOT FUN, and I would MUCH rather be LAUGHED AT than do that again.

    WOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

I neglected to mention, on my previous post, that the BEST last-ditch backup plan is Hickery making you a cup of coffee! Lets just say it's LIFE-GIVING!

Seriously, I'm glad you will be there, Kent. It will be great to see you again.

Everyone have a safe drive in.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!! That's great, I'm really glad you all chose us instead of that long drive North. Looking forward to seeing all of you again.

What time will you be dropped off? I'm planning on sleeping there Thursday night myself, and hadn't decided which route to hike.
