Uwharries This Week?

Hi Gang,

Thinking of hiking some in the Uwharries Thurs, Fri, Sat - 1/16 - 1/18.

Anyone interested?

Yeah, I know, most of you can't during the week - sorry but this is what fits my schedule right now and the weather looks pretty good.

No plan yet beyond getting to the forest and getting camp set up somewhere before dark on Thurs. I like the idea the fellow from Fayetteville had a few weeks ago - park at the 24/27 lot and hike in on the forest road the 1 - 2 miles to the Wood Run Camp and then go back into the bush a little ways to the west until away from the forest road / established camp.

Don't know if I am going to try to hike any distance or just camp and day hike.

About 100 yards Northwest of the outhouse - just off to the left of the top of the low ridge. Fire Pit and some left over wood on a rock. One good all nighter chunk.

And the gate is open so you can drive your car up the 1 1/2 miles to the Wood Run Camp / Outhouse.

Lots of figure 8 trail combinations for day trail hiking.

The wife and kids are out of town this weekend so I'm on critter watch.

Gave notice I'm up there the 24th - 26th or 31st - 2nd. Got the thumbs up from "She who must be Obeyed."

And I will be there next New Years Eve.

Thanks Pete! It will probably be where I land Thursday night. I remember you said there was plenty of wood around - I'll be looking for some.

Cool on the gate being open. We had a discussion on that at the Fall Back Hang - has something to do with allowing equal access to all groups - including those with special physical needs.

Was kinda hoping Chigger or Bonepile or perhaps another retiree would be able to make it. Looks like I'll have it to myself like you did.

If you're coming through Troy on 24/27 the Ranger station is just on the East side of town.

Coming out of Bisco it's 4 lanes. When it goes back to two lanes you go down a hill and up a hill. The Ranger Station is on the top of the hill - pretty much - on the right (north) side of the road.

Pull in and go to the little kiosk. Grab a Uwharrie Trail map and a map of the Bike Trails around Wood Run. You'll see how you can put together some good figure 8's.

Most Saturdays if the weather is good there will be a number of Mountain Bikers. Friendly bunch.

The mountain bikers will be something new for me. When I last hiked the Uwharries, the gates were all locked and nothing with wheels was allowed east of River Rd. I have noted there are several bike trails in the Wood Run area now. Might be fun to find a couple of trees just above one of the trails and lay in my hammock and watch em!

My memories of the Uwharrie Trail go back to the late 70s. My ex and I did the 11 mile southern loop on the UT and the Dutchmans Creek Trail in 1976. I remember most of the last 2 miles back to 24/27 along the DCT was a clear-cut disaster. 38 years later I am sure that has grown out again. May have to go see.
