Technique for pads and bottom entry HH

For a while I tried to sleep with a Thermarest Ridgerunner CCF pad with my Velcro, bottom entry Hennessy hammock. Is there some trick to getting situated? After carrying the pad rolled up, it was like a 30 minute aerobic exercise to get in the hammock and on top of the pad. I'm also hearing about using something like reflectix to supplement my UQ, but I have no idea how I'd wrestle with something like that. Tips?

it took me over 10 years but i finally went to underquilts.i had the velcro removed and the foot slit sewn up.then i had a full length zipper added on the right side.i was a pad user for years but i used a claytor jungle double bottom hammock.pads and stock hennessey hammocks are not the most user friendly combinationsneo

for starts i highly recommend having your hammock modified with a side entry zipper and the foot box sewn.Zipper Queen does excellent work. She did mine and many other people on hammock forums HENNESSEY hammocks.this will make using a pad easier and using an under quilt.neo

Thanks, Neo. I had seen those mods before. I guess I'll end up either doing that myself, paying to have it done, or selling the HH for another hammock. They should just quit selling the bottom entry hammocks. It's just not as functional and leafs to frustration.

Well - I'll be the outcast here - I will say that I did buy my 1st UQ a month ago but haven't used it with my HH ultra lite backpacker yet. You can make the pad work or add zipper or look into the HH super shelter. If you use a TQ, get an UQ or SS.
I've had my bottom entry HH for 5 or 6 years and use it in bug season with a 36"Lx30"W pad (Gossamer gear) and sleeping bag. It took me several trips to figure out proper starting positions of pads and sleeping bag. Proper set-up is key to reducing acrobatics.
If you want to make the pad work with a sleeping bag, try this:

I set-up with the foot end of the hammock a couple inches higher than the head end.
The pad goes in first - from the fwd edge of the entry hole at a slight angle for the a-sym.
Sleeping bag or TQ on top - opened it up and place the foot end off to the side into the hammock foot box.
Enter hammock by sitting on the SB and pad with your butt as far forward as you can get.
Lay back and put your feet in SB and zip it up as required for the weather.
I wrap my pad in an old flannel sheet (for moisture control) and it doesn't move.
Enjoying the simple things in life.

Thanks for the tips, oldpappy. I'd like to push my 20* UQ farther by using some kind of pad. I'll keep experimenting and try your suggestions
