Looking for a simple, light weight, high quality headlamp. Preferably a Petzl that uses standard or lithium batteries. To be used for general camping purposes.

I picked up a Princeton Tech headlamp for less than $20 at Academy that works good. Red LED plus two brightness settings, small, light, and comfortable.
Here it is on Amazon...Princeton Tech Byte
I have a Rayovac Sportsman that I have used for about 5 years I think I paid around $8.00 for it
cheap but pretty rugged uses 3aaa batteries

"HANGING OUT" has taken on a whole NEW MEANING
I have larger headlamps, but now I only take my Petzl E+LIte. It is small, light, and has 26 lumens of output. Plus I can carry extra 2032 batteries without much weight added.
Includes both white and red LEDs.
It has been very reliable and has plenty of illumination for setting up in the dark or night hiking if needed.
I like the $4 walmart Ozark Trail one. The one with the low power (50 lumen) LED that stretches out the AAA batteries. They have a kit which comes with a low power headlamp and a high power LED hand torch (around 300 or so lumens) which I'd get. I'd keep the high power in a pocket as a backup and to use for spotting while trekking, and then use the low power all the time, at camp, and in the hammock. I think that kit runs about $10. I've had one of the headlamps for over a year and keep it in my BOB. Seems about the same as the one I payed $30 for at REI.
I highly recommend the Black diamond line. Either:

If you want rechargeable or

If you want cheap and waterproof. My last headlamp was a Petzl, and it was alright. Black diamond has the best/most intuitive dimming/strobe features and are a little better product IMO.
Watch Amazon.. there's been a few in the lightning deals in the last few days.. and a few more coming up I believe
As you probably have seen, there's quite a range of features in headlamps.
For 'ordinary' use (i.e. not hiking/running in the dark, not signalling for help, not map reading at night) I like the Tikkina 2.
http://www.mec.ca/product/5019-582/p...ina-2-headlamp
It has two settings - bright and not-so-bright. The switch sequence is Off-Bright-Off-Lo-Off-Bright, etc..
No dimming, no hold the button for 3 sec for one action, press quickly for another, etc.
I have a couple of other headlamps (Vizz, another BD one) which have lots more features and I end up pressing the button umpteen times to get what I want. I'd probably 'get it' if I used the same headlamp all the time.....
When I hear that 'funny noise in the middle of the night' outside the hammock I don't want :
a)strobe
b)dim red light
c)lock the headlamp off and get a blue flashing LED indicator
I want LIGHT, NOW, even though I'm half-asleep....
Maybe it's a 'senior thing' ??
Thanks for the info. That's the one I've been looking at.
Simple is better - an on/off switch is something I can still handle.
