    door kit leak?

Hey, apologies if there is a thread on this but could not find it.

In a decent rain, does a door kit/grizz beak allow rain to drip down the main fly under the added door? Seems that it naturally would allow some water to pass through since the edge of the door kit angles up to catch rain. If so, has it given anyone a problem?

The things are probably designed the way they are for good reason, but seems like the added door should be staked on the inside of the tarp, so that the main tarp edge is overlapping the door at a downward angle, rather than having the door kit edge angled up to allow rain down. I hope that makes sense.

I am just going off pictures and have not actually messed with a door kit in person.

I usually pitch my GrizzBeak and doors(different tarps) in vestibule mod for more space under the tarp. I've never had any issue with rain coming in. Biggest issue with rain is splash up from the edge of your tarp in storm mod.

We have not heard of any issues with The Grizz beak leaking if installed properly. I imagine the overlap of the tarp is more than sufficient to prevent that. The Grizz beak is also designed so the doors overlap vertically from the ridgeline creating a vestibule. This also would prevent that. With all doors or door kits, the main culprit for rainwater entry would be the hammock suspension through the doors. Be sure to have some sort of drip edge to prevent the rain from following the suspension.

I guess having enough overlap is key. Depending on wind it's possible that water could get through but not likely. And people seem generally happy with door kits, so it must not be an issue.

Yes, great pic- the kind that makes you wish you were there!

Seeing as you would be more concerned with the upwind side, the rain would blowing over the flap over the body of the tarp. I only have one beak so it get put up toward the wind. If it were on the other end I imagine water will get up under it but if you have nice taught pitch I think it would run down the edge of the tarp. Like I said I only carry one so never really had it on the other end in the rain.

When installed correctly, it actually works better on the outside and not inside as you suggested. It's based on the same way shingles work. The overlap is snugged up against the tarp and pulled tight to make the water shed down the connection and not under it, even with wind(within reason).

Looking at that beautiful pic above shows the overlap. Think of the beak like a triangle with the point being far from the tarp. The other 2 corners don't stop at the tarp, but then fold over the tarp to seal that end of the triangle.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
