As to the original question: I got a thread injector for christmas so I am now happily bar tacking, and box stitching and my dogs have new tubular nylon collars.

You can use a "Tape Knot" or "Water Knot" (Same thing) with webbing and it will hold. In fact, this is the recommended knot for repelling off of webbing loop around a tree or rock. (have done it many times) And if you take the time to dress it and get it nice and flat it actually looks very nice and neat.

This knot used to be common in rockclimbing before sewn webbing loops came on the market and made it outdated. Seems to be different in canyoning (which I don't know anything about)?
If you use it be sure to know it can loosen itself, so always check before each use.
