    Gideon,

That restriction : "Please do not injure the trees. No nails, screws, ropes or lines are permitted to be tied or inserted into trees, shrubs or other structures."...............

reads similar to Florida's restriction which does allow for tree straps. With regard to your tarp ridgeline, you could consider affixing it to your suspension system or, play the ol' Denny the Dunce routine if the Ranger shows up.

"What?" "I didn't know that. I'm so sorry. Here, let me fix that by removing the line from the tree and putting on my suspension strap."

Anyway, good find and good to know. I hike the Adirondacks at least once a year. I'll keep that in mind.

    All the best !

Definitely a Park specific regulation, not a Forest or other state land classification regulation. Not an issue in the Adirondacks, Catskills or other State Forests.

That restriction is definitely targeted towards state park campgrounds, which are intensively used camping sites. NY State Parks definitely have more restrictions than state forests (for example, NO FIREARMS ALLOWED in state parks).

NYS forests are pretty great, in that you can camp basically anywhere as long as you're 100 ft from a trail or water source. You can pull over your car on the shoulder of the road (or designated parking site) and just walk into the woods.

Even still.. I took my daughter to a half dozen state campgrounds over this past season.. without issue on either tarp or hammock attachments..

And actually, The DEC regs say nothing about it in state campgrounds..

and for as cold as it's been.. I'd recommend going to see Kaaterskill Falls.. I've not been there yet this winter, but it was beautiful last winter
