    8-Ounce Thread Cone: Diameter?

I want to buy some thread for my new sewing machine - the biggest cone possible.

But the machine has a thread stand that folds inwards when the case is to be closed and 16-ounce cones are too big.

The retailer does not sell 8-ounce cones so he can't say if the case will close with such a cone in place: http://tinyurl.com/l44y9lo

Is anybody using 8-ounce cones? If so what is the diameter at the base?

Hey first post. Welcome! Can't you simply remove it and lay it on the machine bed when going to close the case. That'd be the worst case if it's too big. Just sayin. Enjoy and glad to have you here! Peace, Two Tents and my little dog ben
I like refried beans. That's why I wanna try fried beans, because maybe they're just as good and we're just wasting time. You don't have to fry them again after all.

Cones that large often do not fit properly on the spool poles built intothe machine. It's an easy work around with a separate thread feeder stand. You can find a number of different options for designs and DIY plans on the forums if your google fu is up to it.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

That is what I have now. viz: http://tinyurl.com/l44y9lo

The limit comes when it gets folded in prior to replacing the top of the case.

Looks to me like it can handle 3" diameter for sure - maybe up to 3.5" with a tight fit.

But I have no clue what the diameter of an 8-ounce cone is. Nothing I have Googled so far specifies cone dimensions.... just weight and length of thread.

Maybe I'm trying to fight Mother Nature on this and I should just buy a couple of 4-ounce cones....

That gizmo is exactly the type of thing I was recommending. You should be good to go. You'll just have to rethread the machine when you set up again. That's not really a biggie in my mind. Many machines won't move when fully threaded. I have to take any spool off before I can put the case on my machine.
