What are you using the bungee cords for? I can't quite tell from the picture, though it looks like you might be using them to attach your tarp to the tree …

If that's the case, I'd consider using regular rope to tie off to the tree, and getting the ridge of your tarp as tight as you can - that's the one part of your tarp setup you don't really want any stretch in.

If you're using them somewhere else, and my eyes are playing tricks on me, disregard.

Otherwise, not a bad setup for the cost.

Looks like the bungee cords are on tarp ridge line? If so, I ditch that and go with a static rope. That'll fix that bunching in the middle that could cause issues in the wind. Tighten her up!

All the previous suggestions are spot on.

    They are metal grommets.

Will do can go up easily on the straps as they are only 10 usd at harbor freight for 600lb ones that weight close to the same.
*after checking* checking with the hammock hang calc I found I should be fine but probably going to be safe then sorry.

As for the pad yeah already decided to take a trip tomorrow and spend a little bit more there.

As far as the bungee right now its a temp fix on the tarp to help from the grommets to the tree.

Keep the advice coming as I said to the PSH folks just a newbee hear trying to learn. Any advice is taken to heart as you all for sure know more than I do.

Personally I think your set up is really cool; it won't last but it's cool. And what I mean by "won't last" is that over time you'll enjoy upgrading this piece or that piece. It'll be fun and add up to way too much money but in the end, it'll look a lot different than it does today.

So enjoy this initial foray into the hanging world; I'm also impressed with your frugalness, I think that's becoming a lost character!

Give us a report after your first in the woods hang!!

@Gideon Will do and the "frugalness" comes from the fact that I have little to no money to start this as I spent a lot on xmas. This after draining my savings purchasing land and starting the wheels in motion to build and semi-offgrid small cabin on the land. I just planned to get some gear I can use and some knowledge then end up purchasing parts piece by piece as I did my other backpacking/camping gear.

Update: slept it last night and it was a mild night and was roasting like a bake potato. Only issue I had was I forgot something to rest under my head so part way through the night had a kink in my neck.

I agree with Gideon. I love your setup. Fun is not attached to top of the line gear. When I was younger I owned a Yugo car. It did the same thing as a Linclon. It took me from point A to point B. The same goes for gear.

Nice beginner set up. I'm glad to hear that you're getting into this on the cheap. Lean, Learn, Learn. That way, while you still have a functional setup, you can go to group hangs and see for your self what options are out there.

    Best of luck.

Good start -you'll probably need to add drip lines to divert water from running down the hammock (and maybe tarp) suspension during rain.
Now you enter the evolution of a hammock camper - Learn how to use what you have, fix what needs fixing, and beef up what you decide you need to beef up.

I've never needed drip lines on my tarp.
