REI, and many of the other big box outdoor stores carry it.

I buy the Concentrate here, Martins 10% Concentrate, and mix it .25% to treat my gear. It also works well around the house and on livestock and pets.

On the Thermacell, like is stated above, they work very well when it isn't windy. Under a tarp they are great.

Hijacking in process... thermacell makes a nice hand warmer, too. just pull the insecticide pad out. Creates some decent btu's for taking the chill off. May work inside bag or quilt too, I haven't tested that tho. ymmv

I haven't tried this myself, so this is strictly anecdotal, but I've heard that the butane cartridges that power hair dryers are a perfect fit for ThermaCells, and much cheaper than TC refills.

Love your thinking Spidennis...but at the beginning you said you wanted it to be freestanding. Any more ideas on this feature?

Also, ref the bug bivy ($79) someone posted the link for... This has more headroom for reading and avoiding claustrophobia. I added more no see'um mesh to mine to form a footbox. Since I'm short, a pack or something underneath the mesh will elevate it off my feet.

    sandykayak,
    my thread got hogn8r-ed!
I started up a new thread here but it seems my old one isn't dead yet!
    http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=12269
you'll see some pics of stuff that's re-inspired me ......
hogn8er, yup, I'm looking for a machine! It may end up being a walmart special for starters but that should make my bug bivy easy enough, right? I saw somewhere that if you can use a bandsaw then you can sew. Ok, I can handle that ! I'm gonna try to stay away from the chemicals to treat my gear, if I can, at least for now.
Oldgringo, a tent might be ok, but then if I do find a place to hammock, then what? besides, I already have two nice tarps .....
and back to sandykayak, freestanding? somewhat. when I do trips on my motorcycle I can tie one end to my bike and the other to something like my camera tripod or such. when I kayak, it could be my two piece paddle? I'm still working out those details ....

I have some materials that I use, I have some bug netting and I'll use the piece of crap sportsman's guide tarp that I had hung up at the tx hang, I'll use that for the floor. Next I'll need some zippers, suggestions?

as suggested my hogn8r, I'm not gonna mess up my existing bug nets for my hammocks but make one from scratch. It should be simple enough as it's only an A frame shape, nothing curved, rounded or something of a weird shape.

A Wal-Mart special will definitely work for your first sewing machine, maybe even your last; it's not like we sew heavy duty material. For zippers I use OWF.com Zippers, they have what you need. I use the coil zippers, #5 seem to work well, but I would use a bigger size on any thing that might be rolled on and stressed.

As to the shape, a simple A frame would be pretty easy, as would a tube net, like a tube tent, cut the ends at angles and leave them open to use with your hammock as well (to run the suspension through). I would use a separate ground cloth.

re making a hammock free standing... I keep wondering about using two aluminum tent poles and crossing them diagonally (as in a dome tent). You could tie a bow/use velcro wrap where they cross on top. Just haven't thought of an end "hole/grommet/pocket.." to stabilize the ends of the poles.

similar idea to the epco screen thingy I bought from campmor and posted the link yesterday.
