MA>Jingle Bell Hang Dec 21-22 TRIP REPORT

I arrived at "the Pines campground " not knowing what to expect as it was our first time. The owner Paul was very accommodating as he allowed us free range beyond the primitive camping area. The bottom line is, It is a great place that offers, close to home, wilderness, winter hammock camping! We ate well, we had much fire time, lots of stories and gear talk, most of all hanging with friends.

The Pines Campground , Ashby MA.

“And so the Shortest Day came and the year died
And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world
    Came people singing, dancing,
    To drive the dark away.
    They lighted candles in the winter trees;
    They hung their homes with evergreen;
They burned beseeching fires all night long
    To keep the year alive.
And when the new year's sunshine blazed awake
    They shouted, revelling.
Through all the frosty ages you can hear them
    Echoing behind us - listen!
All the long echoes, sing the same delight,
    This Shortest Day,
As promise wakens in the sleeping land:
    They carol, feast, give thanks,
    And dearly love their friends,
    And hope for peace.
And now so do we, here, now,
    This year and every year.”

MA>Jingle Bell Hang Dec 21-22 TRIP REPORT

===> Got a fairly late start, and arrived at the site about 45 mins before dark. After checking in, I drove to the end of the plowed road section, saddled-up, tossed the snowshoes on, and began hiking in the direction I was told we should be. After about a 1/4 mi or so snowshoe, and a few "Whooo-Buddies', I got a return Whoo- Buddy back.

Found Gastar, who was set-up deep in the (real piney) woods! After exchanging the secret handshake, and HF sign/countersign, found a site to hang, and began to set-up myself before dark. Barely managed to untangle the badly packed Superfly and put it over my new RidgeRunner before total darkness. Not long after, another HF Signal Call, and it was McRat coming in down the now slightly packed down trail.

Greetings and re acquaintances all around, and it was time for dinner. We had purchased two huge barrels of wood, and Gastar had a nice fire going already. He also brought a very, very, cool adjustable tripod grill, and we quickly had marinated steaks, Tortellinis, and baked potatoes over the flames.

We added some Jamaican Jerk Rice and Chicken as a side dish, with a fresh dozen donuts for desert with Instant Espresso. We eat well in the woods!

Fireside chat was great! The temps never got below 35 or so, and the evaporating snowpack made it like hanging in soup! Everything was wet in the am, and we did get some sleet/rain at night.

Here are a few shots. Phone died, so this is all I managed to get:

We camped at the end of the Primitive Camping area on the far left (marked with 3 red "X"s.

Gastar looking for something. Probably signal flares. We were out there.
McRat and Gastar just outside the Piney Woods.

McRat trying to kill Gastar with a strange eating implement:

Yours truly, new eye and all:

MA>Jingle Bell Hang Dec 21-22 TRIP REPORT

    PART 2:

This would be a great place for a NEHHA hang centrally located in central Mass, close to both So NH and ME! The owner said he could easily accommodate well over 100 hangers in his property, and would welcome us there. There are amenities there if wanted - showers, laundry, etc. Plenty to do, and plenty locally. Would make it less of a trek for many being in the middle of the state!

Okay. My second night in the new RidgeRunner. I actually had an odd time because of all the time I have spent in gathered-end hammocks. Found myself subconsciously trying to get a diagonal lay in the beginning, which does not work in the bridge hammock! But once I settled mentally on a centerline lay, it was goodnight Chaaaz!

Early in the morning I heard a coyote howling, and shortly thereafter heard a noise behind the hammock, and turned to watch a nice Whitetail Doe slowly walking through camp, about 30-40 feet away. No hurry, just walking on through, looking at the hammocks. Very cool!

The three if us had geared-up for what we thought was a real winter hang, and I, at least, brought overkill for the milder weather. 35*out, and I had a 0* Lynx UQ, and an overstuffed 0* HG Burrow! I found myself stripping down to underwear in the hammock in a short time, and unzipping the base layers and removing my hat to vent body heat! When our vendors say "0*". They mean it!

All in all, a great time, with great friends, great gear talk and tour, and a new scalp taken for winter hanging and a great potential Spring/Summer hang location!

Thanks to all for the great food, conversations, many laughs, and great ideas!

I for one will hang there again this Winter, and in the Spring!

Wish I could have made it out there with you guys. It sure looks like a great place to hang. I am surely looking forward to the Nor' Easter Hang in January. I hope that we get more snow for it because after this weekend there is NO 😳 snow left. High temps in the 50's and rain just knocked down in a hurry.

===> We could put a good-sized hang together there, Tim! Acres and acres of Pine Forest, a brook and pond with Native Brook Trout, and local amenities.

It is only about 90 minutes from Western Mass, a touch over an hour from the Boston area, with 4 Season camping, and totally hammock friendly! We'll organize another hang there after the new year, so more folks can come.

May you and Lil Princess have a safe, happy, and HEALTHY holiday!

Sounds like a great place to hang Sky. Thanks for the SitRep.

We just recently had a hang in the DAR State Forest and it sounds like this place is superior. Can't wait to check it out.

Many thanks Sky and hope to see you at the Nor'Easter next month. Sounds like the eye is coming along. That's great that you were able to get out.

    All the best !
