Question Question on what I need to make my hammock like this

I just ordered a Hennessy Explorer Deluxe with the Hex Rain Fly and a Super Shelter.

I want to mod my set-up to look like the one below, with how he has what looks like his rain fly extending out and tied to these poles? Or are those hiking poles? or are those made for that?

I want that set-up so I can have a few extra feet of dry campground.

Those are trekking poles. Any pole or stick will do but trekking poles are easiest. That setup is generally called "porch mode" around here. Set in your pole and tension the line and you're off and running.

Trekking poles upside down. Points through the corner triangle loops. Loop a tie out over the pole tip and tie it out and your tarp is in porch mode. Lots of room under the tarp until the weather gets really foul.

Porch mode is very popular. It's a great place to cook under in the rain as well as watch storms, sunrises, sunsets or view picturesque landscapes. The hiking poles can be set up either handle up or down or just find a stout fallen branch.

Question on what I need to make my hammock like this

Hey Lee, when weather and terrain permit I also like to just tie the guy lines out to other smaller trees/ branches if they happen to be the right height. There are lots of ways to get in porch-mode but the trekking pole method is the surest, most stable, and most popular option.

Another option for you. I don't use hiking/trekking poles myself. I use a single walking staff....thus my 'Tri-Pod Bob' moniker. When I set up in "porch mode", I use the staff & a piece of deadwood of similar size. Then, I wrap the tie outs around the top of each & stake out to the ground.

I've tied mine out to trees to emulate this look. But you have to be close enough to other trees for it to work.

If your tarps ridgeline currently attaches to the hammock you might want to look into hangin the tarp on a seperate line so when you climb in and out of your hammock the tarp is not moving all over the place.
