    Length of UQ

    Hi there.
I'm brand new to hammocking (just got my first hammock from my daughter, so we can say a hammocking virgin) and still try to get my head around complexity of it. There is many questions but first is a length of under quilt. I'm 6'4" so what length should be my UQ?

Some of us prefer partial length and some a full length. I did this video which may shed a bit of light for now.
    Enjoy the hammock quest.

It's worth noting "full length" differs from vendor to vendor. I have two quilts both sold as full length, one is 66", the other 77". I'm 5'10" and to get comfortable shoulder-to-toe coverage I need a footpad when using my 66" UQ in temps below freezing.

Here is my advice roughly when folks ask what they should look for in length for an underquilt.

    Partial verus Full length:

Choosing between the two are a couple factors. Partial length quilts came about to reduce pack volume and make use of a pad that can serve double duty as a sit pad around camp or on the trail...make that log a little more comfortable. Some pack manufactures also use a pad as the back support...mostly ultralight packs....so now the pad could serve 3 uses making it more functional for the weight to carry. In the long run it works out as a net weight savings over a full length quilt.

Full length quilts however can function warmer as if you roll over and the pad moves out from under your feet they get cold and you wake up...a full length quilt does not have that issue. They let you stretch out and your still insulated. So if you move a lot in your sleep, or like to stretch out as much as possible a full length might be better for you.

With everything there is a give and take with it but that's part of the fun of piecing together a system that works for you.

My DIY UnderQuilt covers me from shoulders to ankles. It is 55" long. If I need more warmth for my feet I add a small sit pad under them. My head usually has some type of insulation (shirt, hat, puffy, etc) under it, so it stays warm.

    Lots of options.
I've gone to find myself. If I get back before I return, make sure I stay here.

When I see lovers' names carved into a tree, I don't think it's cute. I think it's strange how so many people take knives on a date.

    Cheers guys.
Shug I saw almost all your videos mate. Actually they moved me towards hammocks.
Pgibson, thank for your advice. Guessing the way I usually behave during sleep I'll need the full length. Few extra grams do not make different to me.
Thanks again and Merry Christmas. Hope, will get no coal this year. ;-)

    Welcome to hf.

Are you from falkirk in Scotland? I'm just outside Edinburgh!

I got a full length for winter and will be getting a 3/4 length summer quilt.

I am quite an active sleeper, but I never seem to move an inch my hammock!

    Hi Craige
Yes I live in Falkirk next to you. As you are the seasoned hammocker I'd like to ask you for the recommendations where to hang. Any nice sites around?

Wow, sorry it took so long to get back to you... there are quite a few nice spots around me, I haven't been backpacking yet (still getting my gear together for it) but there are some great spots around Peebles, obviously the Pentland hills are great to wander and there are plenty wooded areas to hang and I have hung a few times in the Clark estate in Penicuik. Galloway forest is fantastic, and probably the easiest for you would be Loch lomond area.
