    Nite-Ize figure 9 question.

Ok so I purchased a Nite-Ize figure 9 150lb version for my tarp ridgeline but after looking at it I find it hard to believe it can only hold 150lbs. Does anyone have any experience with these and if they will actually work for more than that?

*note* I know that you should never exceed the working limit listed by manufacturer but this is a curiosity as I have seen ropes or carabiners hold stresses almost double to triple the listed weight.

I've never had the occasion to test it that high.

That said, bring an extra to Frozen Butt and I'll show you what a real stress test looks like.

The max rating is what the manufacturer is going to allow themselves to be liable for.

I use the small Figure 9 carabiner, and it works great for a tarp ridgeline.

I have 4 of them spare so we can stress test it and see what it can hold then. I am going to stress test it tomorrow with my hammock chair I made from 550 and see if it can hold me sitting in it bouncing about 5 inches off the ground. Just was curious if anyone has messed with them.

WLL or SWL is generally 1/5 of the load required for the device to fail. But the safety factors are there for a reason. What are you thinking of using it for?

Not really sure at this moment just was thinking if I know what the actual limit is if I have any ideas. Like say hanging my paracord hammock chair from 2 of them for quick setup for short breaks in a hike for example. I mean who knows what other uses you can find once you know its true breaking point.

Sounds like you're actually considering hanging a hammock using the Figure 9s, which I would consider dangerously crazy. But hey, you wouldn't be the first:

No I am not that courageous because I do not want anything giving out while I am sleeping... no bump in the night for me thanks.

Then don't worry about the Figure 9s for hanging a tarp - there's no way you'll be putting 150 lbs. of stress on them. I used them for a couple of years before moving on to Dutchware.
