What Distance From Class 15 Bobbin Using v92?

In the interest of not having to do a bobbin change part way through a long seam, it seems worthwhile to know how long a seam can be sewn with a full bobbin.

Before I burn up a bunch of thread doing my own test, I figured maybe somebody else has already answered the question:

"What is the approximate distance one can sew before using up a full class 15 bobbin of v92 thread?"

    5mm stitch length.

    Straight Stitch?

    Zig-Zag?

I can't answer your question, but I wonder what you are using that heavy of thread on.

Canvas work, boat cover.... and sometime soon: sail making.

I've still got some v69, but next time I buy it will be v92 and I will use that for everything just for simplicity.

Lighter weights, of course, for the home machine.

Most bobbins wind up till they are near full. No real distance/length could be determined.

Unless you order wound bobbins at a predetermined length, it would only be speculation as to how far you can sew. Bobbins can be wound tight, loose, somewhere in between. And full bobbins on one machine dont equal the wind of another...they will vary some.

Maybe a simple way to guesstimate would be wind up a bobbin with 5 feet of thread. Do a quick test. Then do the math.

Sailrite sells prewound bobins in V92 and they have them in 20 and a 25 yards. So I would go on the conservative side and say 20 yards.
    Good luck,

    I think you're pretty close.

On the two bobbins I wound myself, I got fifty feet out of one bobbin sewing 5mm straight stich and about 49 out of the other sewing 5mm zig-zag. v92 polyester.

As somebody else observed, hand-wound bobbins are not particularly consistent in length - which I'd guess explains the smaller-than-expected diff between zig-zag and regular.

My OCD tendendencies did not move me to unwinding a bobbin to measure actual length.....

I stitched some 27 foot seams on a sail with zig zag and v92. Used almost all of it. I would say 20 yards at most. Your 49' seems more like my experience.

Canvas and sailcloth is SUCH a joy to work with compared to nylon and sil.
