    multi peice hammock question

hello all. been lurking around here for a while and have learned lots of great info. this is a great community that i am looking forward to being a part of. I have read lots, and lots about making my first hammock. I have always valued making my own gear even if it ends up costing more in the long run. I got a sewing machine now (my grandmothers old singer 638) and 8 yds. of 1.9oz rip stop. I intend on making an oversized gathered end hammock. my question is this. My fabric is not as wide as I want the finished product and i am curious where to make the seam and how to join it. should I run the seam down the center of the hammock? Should I just add a strip on each side to get my desired width? Could any of you experts give me some suggestions? Also what would be the best way to join the pieces? what thread would you recommend.thanks so much.

I wouldn't put a seam down the middle. I would add strips the the edges to get the width you want. The "wing" seams will bear less stress than if you put it down the middle.

This advise is spot on. Also consider how uncomfortable that seam could be every single time you used the hammock. So strength and comfort both put the seams on the wings.

    multi peice hammock question

How wide is your fabric? I'm very big (6' 4", 380 or so) and I've always been happy with standard fabric widths.

I'd suggest you run a hem down each long side, for strength on the edges, tie an overhand in each end, larks foot your suspension, and try it out. That's the fast way to get the length right as well.

If you don't like it you can cut off the hem and proceed.

Never been happy with seams under me.

    thanks

thanks for all the thoughtful reply's. the fabric is 57" wide before the hem. I am shooting for a bigger hammock then I can always make it smaller was my thoughts. I am going to start with 12' long and 7'5" wide. I have 2 young daughters that will probably take ownership of it for them and their friends to hang out in. thanks again and merry christmas
