Pillows and comfort in new hammock

    Hi All,

I'm a new hanger, but with a lot of ground camping experience. I recently bought a HH Expedition Asym Classic, which I'm pretty happy with for the time being.

When camping in tents or under tarps I'm used to stuffing clothes into a stuff sack to use as a pillow, along with my sleeping pad (3/4 or full length self inflating depending on conditions).

As I'm a new hanger, I'll probably just use my current pads with added insulation wings for the majority of 3 season camping here in Australia, until I can justify the expense of buying a TQ and UQ.

However, I was wondering if other hangers tend to use self inflating pillows or other items for comfort? In a HH, should I be able to hang it well enough to sleep without a pillow?

i first bought a inflatable pillow, wasn`t happy with it. i ended up with a down pillow from wilderness logics, really comfy & small. they also make a synthetic version as well.

I have neck problems and have been struggling to find a good pillow setup. Lately I have been using a therma rest down pillow in the small size. It's small light compressible design seems to give just enough neck and head support. The Inflatable pillows just seem clammy all the time.

I use a small camp pillow(non-inflatable) just to get good neck support. I personally need a pillow in the hammock.

Welcome to the forums. I use a small Kelty camp pillow when I hang.

Pillows is a personal preference thing. Some people use them, some can't sleep with them. For me it really depends on the hammock. In my HH I use a small camp pillow. In my DIY hammock, I do not use a pillow at all and it will in fact make my neck stiff if I do. You will need to try it out to see what works best for you.

I used one a few times, then realized I didn't need it at all when I forgot it once. I'm glad because it saves weight and a ton of bulk in my pack. Also, one less thing to mess with in the hammock.

If I'm not worried about space, I love the horseshoe shaped travel pillow. It stays with me in the hammock and gives great support. If I am worried about space, I'll stuff a jacket into my UQ stuff sack. It isn't as nice as the travel pillow, but it helps me.

I need a good pillow to get a good night's sleep. I think I've come upon a "system" that's right for me. I start with an inflatable Exped pillow that is really light (3.6oz). I stuff that into a Therm-a-Rest ultralight pillowcase (1oz). Then I stuff in my down vest on top of hte Exped. The Exped gives me the support I want (I'm a side-sleeper), the vest gives me warmth and softness, and the pillowcase holds it all together.
