    Insul-bright underquilt design

Looking for comments. Please enlighten me if there's a better way to do this before I start cutting material!

Basically a sandwich of silnylon - insulbright - silnylon with a small engineered-in airgap. My understanding is that a small air gap is desired to maximize the effect of the radiative heat reflection.

So I'd make the top layer of silnylon to match the henessy pattern (https://www.hammockforums.net/index.php?page=kaq) and the bottom layer of silnylon and then insulbright maybe an inch or two wider, then sew all three layers around the edges, end result being an air void between the insultex and top layer.

Secured to the hammock by paracord ridges on either side, tied to the overhead ridgeline at either end of the hammock.

Thoughts? Concerns? "I tried that and here's what I learned"?

    Thanks,

    Philip

Concern-solution will not breath and collect your sweat and dampen your gear. I would try to mock up something before you settle on Final design

Because of the silnylon? Is there a different fabric you would recommend? Thank you!

I would recommend a breathable rip stop nylon for the inner and a breathable rip stop with a DWR coating for your outer layer. Your Air gap idea is sound. However if not construed properly, once you are in the hammock it will compress the layers together. This would then greatly reduce the effect you are looking for. If you have the insul brite on hand and just want to get your feet wet go for it. If you don't I would recommend looking into other more proven synthetic insulation materials.

Thanks. Insulbrite is on hand. Better to err on the side of typo much gap? What other synthetic material would you recommend?

Got a few dry nights/holiday/overnight lows in the high 30s so I thought I would experiment. Tonight I am using a sleeping bag using Hillbilly Deluxe's method... So far so good. Tomorrow just insulbrite hanging underneath and we will go from there.

HB's method is pretty slick, and I'm sure it works like a champ. If the have the insulbrite I would give it a shot. Primaloft is the more commonly used synthetic insulation. Good luck and sleep warm!

It will keep you warm but you'll be a bit damp and maybe even soggy. Needs to breath a bit. You are creating a vapor barrier. But I have been wrong before.
I tried something similar years ago and woke wet….but warm.
Carry forth and enjoy the quest.
