Much respect! I have only been in the 20’s so far and can't even imagine that without an underquilt, even if it is a DIY 3/4. My goal is in the teens this year, then we shall see.
Nick you are a polar bear.solo no uq. eating up the cold and wanting some more.way to go.i strangely want and do not want to beat that record.
diyin to hang
Nicely done! It sure is brisk at those temps huh.
Just as an fyi I picked up a little keychain digital thermometer at walmart (bios brand) and it worked down to -33°C at our winter hang last year...confirmed environment Canada's weather station. No pictures unfortunately I dont carry a camera with me.
Congrats on your new PB!
It's a buzz to get down that low in complete comfort.
I was looking at the national weather for the states last night with some -45f temps due, someone has to be out in it.
My current cold PB is -40 from a trip to Sweden last year. https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...ad.php?t=68907
Is this going to start a Cold War Limbo? "How low can ya go?"
COTW, remind us: what was your previous personal best(PB)? Wasn't it done with the base HHSS including small tarp along with a really stout windchill?
Of course, now you have gone and exceeded that PB with out even the HHSS, but only a piece of reflectix(SP?) as far as I can tell. I'm not sure, but wouldn't a HHSS be warmer than a piece of reflectix? Since a lot of us have been warm enough with a SS into the 30s or even colder? Is reflectix good for most folks into the 30s?
And doing all of that with that same +15F Marmot bag on top! I imagine your choices in layered clothing(is it not very compressible?) plays a big role in helping you to sleep with sleep specific gear that would leave most of us getting uncomfortable at temps 50 degrees warmer! Either that or you are just some one who can sleep with basically nothing but summer clothing at 30F?
Or maybe you you just have a high capacity for shrugging off discomfort? Were you warm and comfy, or were you cold?(never mind, I just re-read and see you were comfy)
Either way, pretty wild!
Congrats COTW on your personal best, for sure I would have issues with that minimal insulation, unless I used my clothing system in combination.
Though I have done pretty cold, I've never been out in that cold, with that minimal insulation.
I have been in temp swings from +20 day to -20 night.
Camped at -30 in a Quinzie before, but that is not a direct exposure to the true outside temp, until you go outside to play
I do remember Turnerminator's -40 from last year though BURRR
Practice is the key for all, and having confidence in what your abilities are
Holy crap, good for you!!!! You blew my best of -2 a couple of nights ago way out of the water
