What do you guys do with all your gear when you hang? (boots, etc) I tried a gear hammock last time I was out, its ok, but not great, any suggestions?

I used to hang my gear from one of the trees my hammock is attached to, but now I'm in the habit of just opening all the pockets and putting on the ground under my tarp. If it's raining pretty heavy, I'll pull the bag I'm using to line my pack with out and placy my pack in it. My boots also just stay on the grund under my tarp. I do hang my food from a line off the ground so the critters can't get to it.

Either on the ground under the head end of the hammock, or clipped to a biner off the end of my hammock.
sean Mulhall aka silverfox had a great tip on youtube for this...
I think i'll do this since I have the netted hammock aswell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8N-R67uqQo
I clip my pack with spare clothing & (most of the time) food bag & "stuff" to the head end of my hammock with a large keyring biner. Along side* is my gear hammock: which only holds my boots & a water bottle. Inside the hammock, hanging from the ridgeline is a 7" deep X 9" long net bag where I put: handkerchief, headlamp, glasses. Also hanging from the ridge is a small 2" x 2" x 1/2" generator light & a small pocket knife from Mr Prez & a few spare mini biners. During the night the only thing touching the ground is the end of my trekking pole & some tent stakes.
*The gear hammock is suspended at one end by tieing to the ridgeline near the ring buckles the other end is attached to a trekking pole with a guyline to the ground. It easily supports my 1L water bottle & 3 lb for the pair boots.
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.
I had a pack cover/gear hammock but now that I have a Blackbird, my small items (watch, camera, book, whatever) go in the shelf, a light/thermometer dangles on the ridgeline along with wet socks if any, clothes go in the footbox, and the pack is either on a biner at the whipping on either end or on the ground beneath the hammock. Shoes on the ground where my feet land when I swing them out. Food all goes in a bear can some distance away.

Clear weather. everything goes the ground, and my pack hangs from tree.
Wet weather, I hang the pack from the foot end of the hammock so it under the tarp. my boot are included like that tied by the laces and everthing else is in the pack.
I don't have any gear left over once I hang the hammock. (LOL! not really.)
In theory though: you have your cooking gear, spare clothes and hike clothes, camera, hiking poles, food, boots, sit mat, bathroom gear, first aid kit, maps, head lamp, water, pack...
I used to have a hammock with a pocket (half a dual layer, sewn in) but I'm moving to a lighter fabric so don't want to have the seams in the hammock body. So I'm back to figuring out where it all goes.
- Spare dry clothes go in the hammock with me to stay dry- pillow.
- Hike clothes- it depends. If it's cold they go in with me too so they are warm to put on, because I'm wussy like that.
- Small/important things go in the hammock or in some sort of ridge line pocket, or clipped to the ridgeline- camera, water bottle, first aid kit.
- Food goes in it's food bag, we don't have bears, so somewhere possum proof.
- Bathroom stuff, map, cooking stuff, goes in the pack, pack is clipped or tied to the hammock suspension (or under the hammock on the ground)
- shoes are tied to the hammock if it's wet or under it if it's dry (or up if there is a lot of inquisitive wildlife)
- sit pad becomes a "door mat" under my hammock (could be staked down if needed- I carry 4 light+small stakes for my cooking set up)
It's fun to think about, eh?
