Hi Harstad.
I've been watching the weather like a hawk for Norway on yr.no for months now.
You've had a hell of an autumn the same as us. Shug is out breaking records, and were copping one after another atlantic storms spun up by the deep US cold. Hoping it changes soon, praying that the signs of things settling down soon come about.
Were actually off to near to the Finnish border, leaving the Karasjok area to skirt Finnmarksvidda and then a hop over to Inari. Hoping it gives us a PB cold night on our trip, although getting another -40 will be very lucky I think..
Great looking tarp Pete. Hope it serves you well.

Karasjok is a good starting point when cold is sought after. There is recorded temperatures down to -50c, but that's rare. -20 to -30 is more likely but with this winter there's hard to predict anything. Best chance to hit low temp is to camp down in a valley. Temperature can vary with 10-15 degrees within a few kilometres, even in Karasjok

Thanks Bill, glad you like it It'll get a good testing for sure.
Murphys's law dictates I'll pick the wrong valley.
Is it a better chance of cold going south from Karasjok further inland do you know? One of the potential routes takes us up a river valley towards Ovre-Anarjokka national park.
I would guess that the coldest areas are the major rivers. When going by car from Alta to Karasjok the thermometer sinks when going through river valleys, and rises when going over the vidda "high ground".
Anarjohka is somewhat higer ground, but have some shallower river valleys.
In 1997 I and a friend hiked from Kautokeino to Karasjok through Anarjohka, it was in June and the mosquitos was a nightmare. We used three weeks by foot and did not meet a single soul.
A army friend of mine tried to do the same trip in January a 10 years ago, but they had to abort the trip because of the large amount of powder snow. And he had done a crossing of Greenland, and a few years later hiked Norway by skiis from north to south. But they were "unlucky" with the conditions at the time and only had small time frame to complete their hike.

That's great info Harstad.
The trip across Ovre must have been fantastic, I'd love to do it.
Ovre-Anarjokka is calling for me to do it in the warmer months, a crossing of Sarek too. It's just so seemingly unspoilt and as far away from civilisation as it's possible to be in europe.
Very nice.
Wow! Can I get one of those! I can't wait to hear the trip report.

Very nice piece of craftsmanship.
You mention using polyester bias tape.
All of the bias tape I can find is a poly / cotton blend.
Is there a source for 100% poly bias tape?
I'm afraid to use any cotton for fear of it retaining moisture, and eventual rotting.
Any input?
Thanks,
I've gone to find myself. If I get back before I return, make sure I stay here.
When I see lovers' names carved into a tree, I don't think it's cute. I think it's strange how so many people take knives on a date.
