    Colorado Winter Hang/Hike Dec 2013

This being my first overnighter in the winter away from the car I wasn't really into leaving much behind so here I am with my backpack on my backpack.

Home sweet home, just as the sun is going down.

I was pretty surprised to find out that the only other one crazy enough to do something like this was OutandBack.

Friday was full of sunshine with a low Friday night of 23º.

    Saturday started off pretty bright.

OutandBack elected for a new location a little more protected from the wind after it looked like the forecast was calling for more wind, some snow and lower temps.

It started clouding up around noon. Here's a view of Jefferson and South Park as we went for a hike to the top of the hill.

    Chillin on the couch.

    Making water.

It started snowing around 6pm and it was down to 20º by about 8:00.

A little frosty in the morning.

The clouds/fog was really thick but then cleared away instantly as the sun came up.

    2-3 inches of snow overnight.

Looks like somebody got plenty of sleep.

    And the sun shines again.

What can I say, sunshine, snow, single digits, great place and awesome company. Thanks again O&B, you da man!

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. Hang your own hammock from them as the winds blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves. - John Muir (you know, all but the hammock part)

Enjoyed the pics and report. Doesn't look like quite as much snow as last year, but your temps were every bit as cold. It's a shame you couldn't coax any more hangers out into the cold.

Did you guys find dry firewood up there or did you pulk it in?

I remember last year we tried different ways of starting a fire. I tried the dryer lint method and we'd have froze if that was all we had to rely on.

Missed your company this year TR.
RMCW and I are in the planning stage of another hang in a few weeks up on Mt. Evans. Might be worth the drive.

We had lots of dry firewood to choose from.
A Bushcraft group is using the area so we had about 8 of these to get our wood from.

@RMCW, Great pictures man I'll post a few as soon as I have my coffee this morning.

That couch you made totally rocked and it did'nt add an oz to our backpacks.

    Here's a few more picts.

Decided to backpack in with microspikes, kneehigh gaiters, and hiking poles.
Snow on trail was well packed 8-12" deep. Off trail it was ~18" and very fluffy.
Pack fully loaded was 36# with 1.5L of water. Would melt all additional water needed.

Details of what I packed for this trip can be found here.

Fresh Elk, Deer and Coyote tracks were every where however we did not see any in the 3 days we were up there.
We did have coyote sernades both nights. It was pretty cool.

    Camp slowly coming together.
My kit consists of a TtoTTG 12x10 tarp with 1 set of doors, WinterGnome 11x60 hammock,
WildernessLogic 20TQ, custom WL full UQ 15F +7oz, 2QZQ UQP.

RMCW working on our fireplace couch.

Excellent photos! I used to hang out there quite a bit. This year I helped out with my daughter's surgery recovery. But, I hope to make the next one.

I love all of the detail everyone provides. I learn so much about how you do it from seeing these trip photo logs.

Thanks and I hope I make next year's hang.
