I may be camping this week at Taughannock Falls State Park near Ithaca, NY this weekend. It is nice to know the rules so I will try to conceal my hammock as much as possible in case there are any over zealous rangers. I also am just using ropes at this time, so I will pick up some webbing at the local EMS.

During the month of August, I will be taking a week to bicycle to Outerbanks, Carolina. It will be nice to know what states I may have trouble camping if I encounter any state parks along the route. It is just a secure feeling to know you are not breaking any rules and won't have a ranger wake you up in the middle of the night telling you to take your hammock down.

Thanks again guys and keep it coming. This is good information.
One thing to take into consideration on the Outer Banks. There aren't a whole lot of large trees for hanging. Mostly small scrub oaks. You may get lucky and find something, though.

Cannibal.... The forests are open to dispersed camping for the most part. For the most part you would want to avoid the State Park Campsites like the plague..... There are two entities to deal with in PA... State Parks and State Forests. Both fall under Dept of Conservation of Natural Resources but the two divisions function very differently. You want the forests and they would be most happy to accommodate you.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Yeah, that's the same way it is out here with the Parks. I guess the issue is the State Parks see more usage by 'party campers', the Forests are usually reserved for the more, ummmm, hardy folk. Someday we will have hammock posts at every campsite; this I vow!

I'll have a place to stay once I get to the Outer Banks. Hopefully with two trees 15 feet apart!

Hope you enjoy it. I'm hoping to get out there with my cousin, sometime this summer. Beautiful area.

    Has anyone actually been EJECTED

from a county, state or federal campground due to using a hammock AND while using tree huggers and otherwise in compliance?

And all I wanted to do was get away from it all...back to nature. Didn't know I'd need to bring my lawyer with me.

The idea of bringing a hammock stand complicates things enough that I'd just use my tent. OK...I said it...don't have to keep that little secret inside any longer.

Not me, and what's more I HAVE used a tarp shelter at a state park that was most definitely supported from trees... Rangers saw it and didnt' seem to look twice.

That's actually a good point. When I have the SuperFly pitched with the doors closed, it is fairly easy to mistake it for a large A-frame tent. I had one guy tell me about 4 times how nice my 'tent' looked one day. I just let him go on thinking it was a tent; I was tired.

Forgot to answer my own question--
No prob in any of the venues mentioned and numerous rangers observed, and admired in some cases.
