The old mercury thermometers were calibrated to -40 but the mercury would go lower in the tube so that you could guess what the temperature probably was.

Seriously, I've had my bottom hanging out there in some cold weather and that was intense but I was still 50 - 60 degrees warmer (outside) than you?

I can't imagine dropping my drawers at -30? Talk about frost bite....

Pooping in deep freeze….. just drop all my lower layers and go. I think the body is working at that morning constitutional moment and actually it feels enjoyable. Especially pulling everything back up and on.

How did you plan calories for this? About how much do you usually go through on a day like that? I mean, that fruitcake has to be some all by itself, but man (well, maybe Karl does, but I never figured on him being entirely human) does not live on fruitcake alone.

Also, thank you for a look inside your layering system. It's definitely helpful for those of us in climates that don't quite get that cold.

Pre-cooked a lot of bacon. Cut up tons of high cal meats like fatty salami and beef sticks. Lots of chocolates. Fruitcake. Breakfast was normal but snack all day. Pork chop night one. Honey roasted peanuts by the fistful. More candy. I like to graze all day.

Oh no. I had two pairs of loose wool socks on. I had my Thermarest small sit-pad under my feet and I put my parka around the foot end of my hammock. That is it.

That's crazy.

I think sleeping out in 100º and humidity is crazy)))))))
