    Restringing the yard hammock

After inspiration from another thread about how old Navy hammocks were strung with a hammock clew. We had a cheap hammock for use in the back yard that the cotton suspension lines had stretched and begun to break so I took the chance to figure out the clew technique and restring the hammock using some nylon/polyester cord from Home Depot. I used 2 packs of cord each about 25 yards. All in all the results are pretty good. You can see some of the cords are a little loose. It is a trial and error process so far on getting each individual cord the right length to allow the right sag.

That is good looking! I've wanted to learn this for some time, myself. I purchased the cord for it a couple of years ago, but a) it was the wrong type of cord and b) I was trying to learn by figuring it out myself, often not a good idea.

I don't know of any instructions.

I got the general idea from a photo someone posted here of an old Naval Hammock clew and roughly worked out how it "might" be done. Then I took a few general measurements to figure out how much rope to buy. Once I was ready to start working on it, I was careful to study how the old knots were tied (just a bowline) and as I unraveled the clew at the ring I confirmed how it was woven together. Adjusting the bowline knots is the tedious part. The overall project is pretty easy once you get the rhythm going.

I'll be glad to give you more specific advise if you need it.

I would think you could find this pattern in a macrame instruction book. I have seen supports for hanging pots that use what looks like a similar technique. It may not be called a clew.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

This link gives you the pattern.

Looks really great cavscout! I've been wanting to try my hand at one of these for a long time. Just seems like there is always something else waiting to be done first.

Thanks for the link! That's going to save me lots of time.

I'll post pictures when I finish... probably won't get to it till this next weekend, but I'll be sure to post!
