    Blanket or woobie inside hammock?

I have been using a HH Exped Asym for years and probably have around 150 nights in it. I have never used an underquilt but have definitely been cold some of those night even with various weights of sleeping bags, nothing new. Now I am looking at a Warbonnet Blackbird with an underquilt BUT I am wondering just how comfortable I will be sleeping on 70D nylon instead of some kind of sleeping bag. That being said I don't want to add a tremendous amount of weight for insulation that is just going to be compressed under me. Anyone have a solution? Silk sleeping bag liner, sewn sheet, poncho liner?

    Thanks,

    Mike

I would wait and see how you like the blackbird. Sleeping in it, as with many other hammocks, is comfortable. Most folks don't need something between them and the hammock material other than base layers. Just lay the sleeping bag on top of you. I think you'll be surprised.

I like sleeping straight on the hammock. In the summertime in shorts and tee shirt no UQ it feels good. Wintertime I'll have long pants and shirt on.

I sleep directly on my WBBB and the fabric feels good on my skin. I do not feel that it is necessary to have a liner or blanket between you and the hammock.

I have a HH explorer deluxe and have no problem using a sleeping bag but I do not wear all the base layers that most wear. I do use a sleeping bag and SS but usually I get in the sleeping bag or use it as a TQ. I would not change much just because I would add an UQ or maybe add a tee shirt.

I sleep right on the nylon of the WBBB. No issues. Also, I highly recommend using an underquilt. Round about 65 degrees for me, it starts getting a bit cool without anything under me. A good down UQ is lightweight and extends your comfort range greatly.

    What he said.

Nylon is not uncomfortable to sleep against. I'd wager that a largish portion of the sleeping bags you've slept in over the years have nylon or polyester as an inner shell fabric, especially if they're ultralight bags. The only difference is likely to be the ripstop grid, and that isn't really noticeable (to me, at least).

Give it a go on the nylon before you try to add anything to the hammock. If you really do find it uncomfortable enough that sleeping is difficult, a simple sheet will be enough to go between you and the hammock. Remember that at least one of those things you mentioned, though (the poncho liner) is made of exactly the same fabric as the hammock--70d ripstop.

    Hope it helps!
