NJ -11, it ain't Minnesota cold but...

Continuing my "year under the stars quest", last night, like nearly every night since last March has been sleeping in a hammock outdoors.

Most of the time in the backyard lab, as often as possible, deeper in the woods of the Pine Barrens, mountains of Pennsylvania, New York or Vermont. Learning all sorts of useful, experience taught details, picking up more knowledge at group hangs and being gifted some excellent kit by family members. Speaking of family, they are almost completely assimilated into the hammocking collective, pretty proud of that. The 7 year olds will talk your ears off about whoopie slings, nacrabiners and finding the sweet spot.

But last night was a milestone for this flatlander in the coastal pine strewn plains of New Jersey. Temps reached -11. A personal best for sleeping outdoors. Windchill with 3-5mph breezes dropped the effective temps lower but I didn't notice.

Condensation was an issue, but a minor one, some frost in the WBBB XLC, on the Hammockgear 0 degree Burrow, but nothing too troubling. Plenty warm with my stacked New River and Jarbidge KAQs from Arrowhead Equipment all sheltered by my Old Man Winter from Wilderness Logics.

Wanted to share for posterity's sake as this will be gobbled up by the interweb's Wayback Machine and document something for the kids to research in later years. And more importantly, to thank everyone for pointing me in the direction of the most excellent cottage vendors supporting hammockforums.net.

Would not have enjoyed these past 10 months, or been smiling at -11 without the solid equipment and guidance supplied by y'all.

Checked out and ready for winter hangs in the mid atlantic region.

    Sub Freezing Club - check
    Sub Zero Club - check
    Sub -10 Club - check
Sub -20 Club - not yet
Sub -30 Club - no plans for that yet

Excellent report Ratdog. -11F is plenty cold. Congrats on your new personnal best.
Looking forward to reading about your experiences of hanging thru the winter.
I seem to get frost/condensation about +5F no matter what I do.
Even sleeping with no hammock top cover, tarp, net, or sock. My thoughts have switched
from trying to stop it to tryingto midigate its damage for the following night.

Looks like an awesome trip Rat dog. Makes me excited for the NJ Winter Hang. You coming again this year? Hopefully well have those temps and or colder.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

Good stuff Ratdog. I also slept out in hopes of subzero temps but alas it only hit 0F here in northern NJ.

On the plus side, the air was still so I didn't use a tarp. Even saw a shooting star. Phoenix 0F underquilt with a JRB Winter Nest as a topquilt did the job. Wore two layers top and bottom.

Yep, I'll be there, solo or with guest but I'll be there. Bringing a dutch oven and gonna step up my game to contribute something tasty for meal time. See you there. Bring on the cold, I'm geared up much better this year.

Totally psyched to get to these temps here, never figured I'd have a shot without heading to the Adirondaks or something. So worthwhile to learn from experience, understand limits of gear, conditions and gain knowledge. As you say, dealing with continued condensation on multi day trips is a challenge and I need to work that some more.

See you there, looking forward to it, that and giving your portable kitchen workout. I gotta track down those plans, that is one sweet setup.

Funky front distribution yesterday and I am in a low lying hollar at the end of several hundred acres of open farmland. Winds out of the north bring the cold.

Went with single layer, except for my feet, not sure that was a smart idea and will go back to single set of socks tonight.

Thanks, felt good to get a personal low record in the sub zero club and was warm to boot. Gotta love the cottage gear.
