Help! Hanging on a downed tree?

    http://lh3.ggpht.com/_K1OhbD4o5As/Sg...20Fork%203.jpg

Any suggestions on how to hang a hammock with this downed tree situation? There are a few places where this would be a great place to hang and I am still a novice ....

I hope the picture comes out ... novice at that as well

I have not tried this so it will be "in theory" but I would think you could put your straps on the tree trunk an appropriate distance from each other and hang beneath the trunk. Just be careful getting out in the middle of the night to pee. That first step could a doozie.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Yes, this is one of the many spring fed beauties in central AZ.

So far as hanging off the log, I always thought that an alternative method would be needed to prevent saging or sliding into the center of the hammock ??

Nope, enough span and you won't have any problems.

This is basically the same thing I do at home; just beams instead of a log. Only tricks would be enough webbing to be able to wrap several times (prevent slippage) and enough vertical room to be able to get the hang right. My hammock upstairs is attached to a wood beam that is probably 14' high. Total length for a comfortable hang is somewhere in the neighborhood of 25'. In the cave (basement) the ceilings are much lower, about 7.5'. My length is around 17'.

It'll work, just make sure you wrap your webbing (or rope) several times. Lest you might get 'dunked' in the wee hours if your attachment points move closer.

Like Cannibal I've hung from some high beams in Ranger Cabins. His guesstimate is close to my own ... the higher and thicker the log the longer support line-rope you'll need and prolly more stretch will be in the system.

Nice. I plan to be there on Saturday for 2 nights. The plan is to set up an overnight shelter, up and off of the creek. Then, unhook the hammock and I'll have extra rope/strap on hand to hang near the creek during the day.

We'll see if I can get some pics

Please be ever so sure that the tree won't be going anywhere anytime soon... it looks plenty secure, but you don't want to be under a tree when it decides to move.

    leanto hanging

now that my niece has a hammock for this summer we'll try hanging inside leantos. It's the same horz beam as that tree over the creek. of course we'd only do this when the traffic was light so we wouldn't take up space where the boyscouts would usually camp. usually the campfire pit is close and the view is perfect. we'll hang using the long support beams ...... she had a cheapie backyard tent her mom got her last summer and as we all know tent spaces aren't always in the best of places. this should prove to be fun! she's quite adventurous, maybe even more than me, so our hanging out together should prove for some interesting adventures and photos! If we find this kind of horz tree you can be we'll be there! ..... and I got one (or two, or three ....) just in mind too!

Yea, I can see it now: Splat, Zul pancakes.

Pretty location, I would hang there in a heartbeat.
