    Making Down Pants

Has anyone made any down pants?

I've got leftover down and material from a few years ago when I made my RMS Clone UQ so I finally decided to try making some down pants. I found some instructions online for making lounging pants using a pair as a pattern so basically I'll try using that idea. Some of my stitching plans will be a little different since I have to use multiple layers of material so I can stuff it.

I'd like to hear if any others have tried making them and any ideas you might have.

What material were you thinking of using? You wouldn't want to sit on a damp rock and get that down wet, nor would you want snowfall melting on your thighs for the same reason.

I presume that Goretex/event and other breathables are under consideration. You might also want to to consider cuben. Whatever you choose, moisture management is key.

I made some Frostline down pants years ago. They were ripstop, and they held up very well. The only place with a different fabric was the inside of each ankle, where there was some pack cloth to protect from foot friction.

Let us know how your project turns out. I've wanted to make some more for quite a while.

    Hey Brother!

As long as you use a sitpad, the extra weight from tough fabric is unnecessary for down pants. Having seen your handiwork I know they will be great.

I haven't seen a pattern or a tutorial from someone.

    Let's go hike!

I made some fleece lined wool pants a couple months ago. I wear a 38 normall, so I cut the fleece to size 38 and the wool to size 40. (Esentially a differential cut) They ended up fitting perfectly. I would suggest though buying a pattern. It takes a bit to learn the lingo but they fit better. Make sure you get one with a yoke in the back.

I like the idea. May have to give it a try sometime. Are you gonna use a sewn through baffle? Are you going to end up layering with them? Also how much loft are you gonna give them?

yes you sure can as much as you want. its not the standard ul down its from an old mattress pillow top. very heavy stuff it doesn't compress very well but is warm. that's why I think it would be good for pants, shirts, or any other item that you sit/ lay on

Every time I see this thread title, I'm not thinking of duck or geese feathers.
