I'm also new to the forum, and haven't posted yet for two reasons:
1. I'm still digging through the archives and soaking up the years of accumulated knowledge & wisdom, and...
2. I'm too busy SEWING!!! :-)
Two Speer-style hammocks complete, one for me, one for my son. I picked up 14 yards of 1.9oz coated ripstop from Ed Speer, and am working on tarps. I need to learn to use a sewing machine, for certain.
I've owned a military net hammock for years, just started really using it a couple years ago. Was talking with Shug while he was working (yes- he has a job, and he's awesome at it) and he gave me the hammockforums.net tip. I got bit by the hanging bug BIGTIME now. Best sleep I've ever had in the woods, I won't go to ground again if I can help it!

Since joining (in April), I have made a DIY hammock, hung with it overnight - loved it.
Bought a Blackbird.
Built Cavscout's (and other contributors) hammock stand, - hung with it overnight.
Bought a Yeti.
...and posted pictures all along the way...
All from advice, instruction, ideas from this forum.

Sorry if we (and I, especially) forget to welcome people occasionally. I never got a formal "Welcome to the Forums" thing either, at least that I remember. I'd have to go searching for my first thread, and I'm too lazy. I know Grizz welcomed me, but I can't remember if I was ever welcomed in a thread, so when I see new posters I usually try to welcome, if I catch it.

I too, like Mars am a ground dweller. Today I have posted for my first time.
The idea behind hammocks or hanging from trees intrigued me, and am looking at it as an alternative for light weight gear for back-packing into the high country of British Columbia. I can see the advantages as well as the disadvantages. I'm not sure how they will be in the minus 20's or more. I like the weight issue or the idea that you are truly self-contained. After I have had a chance to digest all the posts and actually get a chance to build one and try it out, will I be able to have any meaningful input. This weekend we will be making a prototype and testing it out.
We have made our own tents in the past, and our latest creation was a 12' x 14' Prospector Tent that was used for hot-tenting in the back-country of northern Ontario where temp's were not uncommon to reach -40C. This tent was made of untreated RS nylon and weighed in at just over 9 lbs. The idea behind untreated is that it is allowed to breath and condense on the polytarp that used as a fly. Maybe more on that later.
OK, I got to get back to reading all these interesting posts.

Many folks here have hung at -20*C (-3*F) It can be done (my best is 3*F with -25*F windchill..others have been as low as -27*F or -33*C!).
