    Flying with TurtleDog

Does anyone have experience checking the Turtledog Stand as luggage?

I've traveled mine by car alot, and I think/hope it'll fly, so to speak, but see if y'all have any suggestion for this setup:

I made a heavy duty cordura fabric bag with a big ol shoulder strap. It has been traveling well from car to hotel room (or family's homes), and I thought I'd wrap both ends of the internal bundle in a towel or fabric and tie it up so the poles wouldn't slide around inside the bag. I'll throw the strap inside the bag at check in.

It looks like a ski bag basically....just a TINY bit heavier. its about 20-22 lbs on my old analog bathroom scales, and is 5' 2'' long( I cut down the 2x2s as low as I could hang with for this traveling version. Pic:

Oops there's that upside down thing again... Thanks for any suggestions or experience with this folks.

I guess I'm worried too about the airlines not wanting to check this bag of steel poles and wooden tripods.

If you are flying to Colorado I see no issues. I've seen much larger and unruly ski bags at the airport. Looks Great!

+1 on outandback comment. some of the ski bags that make it off the planes are a tad rediculous. IMHO you should be fine. of course you'll be paying, but so be it.
There is no try, only do.

Thanks guys appreciate the reassurance! Gophin: I'll be paying, but alot less than a visit to the chiropractor if I didnt take the hammock!

Lady, you are one tough hombre, I mean that in a nice way of course. I envy you this rig that can fly. Please let us know how things work out for you, any particular hassles and so on. I believe I may see something similar in some of my future plans.

old4hats, you are a charmer as always! I will report back, just a few days with friends in Anacortes WA, north of Seattle, my old stomping grounds. 2 day hikes planned for the 3 days I'm out there (!!!!)

    Rats!

Well, it may look like a ski bag, and not weigh too- - much more than a ski bag, but unless there is only one set of skis plus paraphernalia in the bag, they are going to charge you for oversized luggage at least on Alaska Airlines. Looks like I will not be Flying with TurtleDog since it costs more to ship the stand than the chiropractor visit to fix my back after sleeping on a bed for 4 days.

    Too bad...

If you know where you're going and when, could you ship the thing ahead of time? I've shipped some pretty ridiculous stuff, USPS.

I mailed a stainless steel roof rack to a guy. Wrapped it in cardboard and bubble wrap and taped the heck out of and took it to the P.O. It wasn't that expensive, less than $30 I'm sure, and that was heavy!

Yes exactly! I think its a fine solution, and I'll try it ahead of time the next time I have to fly. Thanks for your addition to the stand BTW, I used it on my second stand and my step son's stand, and it's very stable, doesn't 'walk' at all!
