Average weight savings of converting to Whoopies on your HH?

What have you guys seen on average your weight savings when converting to whoopie slings with your HH's?

I have a HH ultralight backpacker and just wondering how much I could save by converting to whoopies.

I asked someone to weigh their ropes after removal. As I recall it was 4 oz. So you will save less than 4 oz.

In return you will void the warranty and make it harder to sell should you decide to do so. Then you have to be so in love with whoopees that you will put up with the fiddle factor and add 2 ft or so to the minimum hang length.

You can avoid a lot of the warranty/resale issues by just shortening the hang rope and tying in a loop or descender ring just past the hood over the attachment point. That let's you replace roughly 3 oz of rope with strap or whoopee without messing up the hammock end and SRL attachment points.

just curious: has anyone had to make a warranty claim on their HH? I guess it could happen, but, IMO, simply changing the suspension shouldn't have any impact to the HH hammock itself - and I've never heard of a new suspension system failing or damaging a hammock. Changing the suspension on a HH hammock is rather simple - you never have to modify or change the RL, it's just simply tying a new line to the existing hammock ends.

You may be correct in that changing the suspension may technically void the manufacturer's warranty, but I wouldn't let this sway you from modifying your hammock the way you want it. Of course, I've been known to customize vehicles which technically voided manufacturer warranties also... HYOH.

The line they use is spectra cord. If you are concerned, save the line and video the removal, so you could easily and acurately recreate the knot configuration, should you need to.

If not for the weight, do it for the convenience of setup. no regrets on mine, and used weight savings toward the snake skins and future tarp upgrade.

I have a HH UL Asym, which I converted to whoopies. I weighed the old lines recently for someone. Each weighed 1.1 oz, so no substantial weight savings, if any, switching to whoopies.

However, I'd do it anyway for the convenience.

I didn't see much weight savings. Maybe an ounce? But some gram wimps will spend hundred shaving off an ounce or two, so really it might be worth it. What I liked about the whoopies more than weight was the savings in bulk (easily half the wadded-up size of the big cords) and ease of use. No more lashings to tie. I did finally go with the longer tree strap though, so any weight/bulk savings are negated by the 8 foot seat belts rolled up in the hammock bag.

Amen rain man, when I wrote this I was thinking of my grand trunk with its thick cordage and s hooks. Just getting from that lashing business is a blessing and the main reason for the whoopies...as we have all stated.

True 2"? You could always fab shorter whoopies, but can't imagine much loss, even if you half the length. Use toggle over carabiner, or lighter carabiner like camp nano 23's.

I'm not sure how much weight I've saved, but it seems like a lot. Definitely a much smaller profile. No more huge stock lines.
