    Undercover idea

New to the forum and hammock camping. Bought a cheap one last spring grand trunk just to see if I would like it. Well don't think I'll spend another minute sleeping on the ground. I just bought a hennessy expedition asym zip and am looking at different options to protect from wind and keep heat in. Gonna be early spring hanging/trout fishing trip in southern wv. Cool nights guessing 40's. I am on a budget and have been Looking into the super shelter just really limited on funds. I've been looking on at getting an eno double nest and using it as an undercover by putting a foam pad and a space blanket in it. They look to be simulate shape as the under cover hennessy makes. Has anyone tried this and how well did it work? Thanks in advance

Thanks. Any experience with these?! Will they hold a foam pad up snug to the hammock.

Donna here....Our UQPs were not designed with this in mind....however, we have been told of numerous people that do just that. We haven't tested using the UQP this way...so we can't comment from our own experience.

I haven't done much testing, but my under quilt protector from 2QZQ is a great piece of gear. It is great at keeping the breeze at bay. I've only used it on cool evenings at home, and it alone was enough to keep my backside warm, in fair temperatures. Then, I threw a light sleeping bag in it, but that will require suspension. The bag just slides and piles up in the center. I suspect the UQP will add 10-15 degrees warmth to my system when completed.

If you are going under the hammock use thick squishy open cell foam as the cover will block the wind and soft foam will let you settle in a bit. You may have a problem blocking the ends to keep air out. Do not know.

Another thing to look at is the various versions of using a poncho liner as an UQ then add the protective cover. The combination will be good to a lower temp and you will have a suspension designed to tighten up. Slide in some refectix, thin polyethylene foam and/or a space blanket to extend the temperature range.
    YMMV

I bought a really cheap $5.00 USD Mattress pad from Ikea. I stitched grosgrain ribbon around all the edges, left little loops of the grosgrain ribbon on each end (4 loops). I ran shock cord down each side and across the ends. Not pretty, however with the quilt protector on, no one sees the ugly stuff. Worked great down to 35 I am sure I could have gone a lot lower. The mattress pad is water resistive. Not a tiny package, I would not load it in a back pack, but it was a cheap quick easy fix. My UQP came from 2QZQ, really a nice bit of gear, top notch design and stitching. Much nicer than I could have made.

+1 on the PLUQ, it will work great with the UQP, and you can add more insulation as needed. It is a very inexpensive solution. Good luck to you.
