    Newbie question

Gotta newbie question for you guys. I've been hanging for about a year now and just started getting into hanging in the cold winter months. I get the whole diagonal lay idea but it doesn't seem possible when you're using an under quilt. I haven't had the chance to try for myself but from all the pics and vids everyone lays in line with their ridge line. Am I missing something or is that just the way it is?

Depending on the UQ, you might not be able to lay as diagonal as without an UQ. In nu DD I can get a good deal more diagonal when not using my UQ. I can still get a pretty good angle with my UQ, just takes some attention when sinching up the suspension.

Shug has a nice little video demonstrating how you can hook up and sinch your UQ, to better accomodate a diagonal lay. I had man trials and errors with my pluq initially, took a lot of fiddling with the suspension to get it right. I also had to sinch up the ends of the UQ far less than I though before it could properly wrap around the ends and make a decent seal.

In my experience, the diagonal doesn't have to be that much off centerline.

As long as your hammock is long enough for your height (for me, at 6' tall, that's a minimum of 10'8" for comfort; 11' is even more comfy), you don't have to get super asym to be comfortable. Just a little bit off-center is enough.

    Hope it helps!

I lay on the diagonal with my UQ. Depending on the hammock I'm using, I may connect an extra adjustable bungee anchor from one of the tabs at the side of the UQ to my ridgeline. This helps keep it from shifting.

See Shug's UQ video for more great tips.

No issues laying diagonal with an UQ.

It depends on the type of underquilt you're using and how cold or warm a sleeper you are. A 3/4 underquilt seems to allow a more diagonal lay than a full-length underquilt. And if you're a warm sleeper, you probably won't have to tighten your underquilt too much, which also helps with going a bit more diagonal.

There are also hammocks which allow to lie flat even when you don't go very diagonal. I don't think that a longer hammock will allow a more inline lay. I sleep almost inline in my 10' Blackbird and get a very flat lay. In my 11' Dangerbird I have to go very diagonal to get a flat lay. I'm not sure if this is a matter of hammock length, though. Maybe it's the way the hammock is constructed...

Set up your system and have a friend of similar size climb in. Have then position them selves as you would in the hammock and then check your under quilt to see what if any tweaking may be needed.

I'm unaware of any limitations sleeping on the diagonal with an underquilt, either 3/4 or full-length.
