I think most will agree that this is a good starter set at a reasonable price. It gives you core components that you need. Think about how you intend to insulate: HHSS, UQ, TQ, sleeping bag, etc.

Like every great hobby, there are endless upgrades, modifications, and investment options....enjoy!

I think you will love it. Mine first was a explorer deluxe with bottom entry. HH didn't offer zip models when I got mine. Still got it! Still use it from time to time! Dutchware gear had an explorer UL on sale at a great price. Check that one out!

It's what I started with last spring. It is nearly everything you need at one good price. I slept great in mine all spring, summer, and fall with my old sleeping bag and a CCF pad in the hammock. As said elsewhere, be thinking of how to insulate it. I recommend and underquilt over the SS or a pad, but that's more money. The advantage is weight and comfort, but at a cost. You can phase that in later

I see some of you refer to this hammock as a "starter" hammock.

I was just wondering as a newbie, why would this be considered a starter hammock? What features does it lack or whatever?

    Thanks

I believe some consider it a good beginner hammock because it's all in one package, no need to buy any extras to begin hanging right away. Plus HH are more readily available than other options, which appeals to first time buyers. They also have all the features one would need in a hammock.

Most people end up upgrading to either lighter options or one with even more features, in example WBBB, DH TB.

I have 2 HH and still use them, they are very comfortable, every hammock has its place on different trips.

It is your first, therefore it is a starter. It will not be your last.

I love my HH. Everything needed at a good price. However, after a little less than a year and between a dozen and two dozen outings here's what I wish for:

    - simpler/lighter suspension than lashing
    - larger (and lighter) tarp
    - zippered bug net
    - maybe double layered for easier pad usage

But none of things keep me from hanging. They aren't even on the top of my buy list for gear.

I also love my HH so I switched to whoopies for awhile and recently replaced them with straps/buckles. Also sent it off to 2QZQ for Mod 4 which allows me to unzip the bug net and stuff it in a sack at the end of the hammock. And I went with the SuperFly tarp. Life is Good.
