    Harbor freight webbing suspension thoughts

I am brand new to hammocking and wanted 2 sets of webbing for my 2 hammock suspensions.
I was wondering if I cut the metal hooks off these harbor freight straps, would it keeping safely up?

I figure each hammock would get one blue and one red strap.

I use straps from harbor freight on most of my setups. But I use the ones rated for 1400lb load I think. The ones I'm useing now are orange. Most here will say that you need a higher load rating than the ones you are looking at. To answer your question, yes you can get a set of ratchet straps and just cut the hook off. If y already have then they will work. I would keep an eye on them. If you haven't gotten them yet look for the ones that are 100% polyester they won't stretch near as muck, the 100% polly straps usually have a higher load rating too...
It's not the fall im scared of, it's the sudden stop at the end!!!

The 500 lbs is the "load" they say you can secure. The breaking strength is listed as 1500 lbs so they should be fine.

Webbing is pretty structural no matter where its from. You shouldent have to worry about the breaking strength as much as abrasion. The better your straps the less they frey in use so keep an eye out for damage.

For less money, you can get the right stuff from Dutch or one of the other vendors here.

Someone suggested buying one of these long slings, cutting it in half and melting the ends. Good idea if you can't sew your own.

I ended up needing 2" wide straps in a hurry because the local parks decided 1.5 was just not enough for them. I grabbed a set of these from Harbor Freight and they worked fine. Just worth noting is I am not a hiker. I do motorcycle camping so weight is a non issue.

I could have purchased cheaper from one of our forum vendors but not getting them same day

Have been using a set of these for over two years now. Cut the metal parts of, leaving the sewn in loop and either run a climb rated biner or more recently I made up some Amsteel soft shackles though the loop that have been working great.

Two years on the same set no sign of fraying or wear. Very solid, made of poly so no/little stretch.

I think you will also find a lot of folks use these:

About par with the super light Dyneema suspensions. I'd go over to Gary at:

and see what he can do. ;-)

You can get any color and length custom made and even have your name or a logo put on them at a VERY reasonable price here..http://www.readystrap.com/ and you will never have to worry about the stitch work as Gary is a top notch strap maker
