2014 thru hike with Clark NX-250

    HI!
I spent a lot of time on the forum last year, deciding first to hang, and then to buy an NX-250. An expensive first hammock, but exactly what I wanted. I'm not much of a poster, but enjoy reading the entries.

Thanks to all who post here. I love my hammock, wish it were a bit lighter, but it is the foundation of my gear for my 2014 AT thru hike.

There is a learning curve for all new things. I have used you as mentors, read the reviews, the how-to's, watched many videos (thanks Shug!), and I am confident going forward.

My observations: my butt gets cold below 50 degrees. Sorry Clark. A thin piece of foam or air mattress are needed for me below that; I use a top quilt, so my butt is on the hammock.

I love the pockets. I store the contents of my pack here each night, off the ground, and get "some" insulation.

I like the new poles. I had issues with the old ones. I'm considering taking and extra set, just in case, as I have not used the new ones. Any thoughts?

I'm starting March 25th, with my new trail name of Curious George. Check out Whiteblaze for how I set myself up for that... Anyhow, my crew (4 grandkids!) think the name is great.

    Happy New Year!

I am very happy with my NX-250. For me it's a versatile comprehensive and bullet proof piece of kit. Insofar as the poles, I find one at the head end sufficient, and though I normally use both, the foot end's is effectively a spare. A sapling of similar length could be made do as well in a pinch. Cold bum has not been an issue for me, but a half folded sweatshirt has addressed cool spots in the past. Have a great and safe trip.

One of the guys who hiked with/near me for over half the states
had a Clark and swore by it.
I saw 3 Clarks the entire trip.

Best of situations and decisions for you Curious George!!

Have fun! You'll certainly be prepared for any type of weather with the 250. It's an awesome hammock. I also have one but chose to take a Dream Hammocks Dangerbird on my AT hike for similar protection but lighter weight. Frankly I wouldn't tote extra poles. If they break or you lose one you can rig it with line temporarily. It may not be perfect but it will work. You may want to have an extra set at home that could be mailed to you if the need arises.

Never done that hike, but have read about it. From what I gather, you don't want to take anything "extra". I also understand you'll probably end up with a different trail name. Best of luck to you! I'm envious!

Thanks for the replies. Good advise on the poles; some duct tape on the trail and a backup set at home will work. Cheers!

A little sad my 180 doesn't have the pockets... may have to break out the singer and fix that!
