After 5 years of DIY gear making (70+ projects), "favorite project" is a tough question. The canvas hot-tent was the most challenging due to overall size and weight, broke a lot of needles thread injecting that monster. Most rewarding was the first Winter Recliner, I've sat warm and comfortable through many awesome snowfalls in that chair. Still undecided on my absolute favorite project but, it's ether the Snow Beast Quilt Set or the R-III Hammock.
Here's my first project, finished it a while back
My first DIY excursion was to sew a 15" wide strip of mosquito netting around the bottom perimeter of my floorless MSR Hex3 tent. I remember it being a lot longer way around that tent than I first assumed.

My first DIY projects were a bug net and 1.9 nylon hammock inspired by cryptic cricket videos on youtube. I followed that with amsteel continuous loops and soft shackles.

Very Cool Idea, im thinking about making a knife out of a file or old saw!
Sewn Through Summer TQ.jpg
My first project was a summer, sewn through underquilt. It has a snap closure foot-box with a draw cord in the hem to tighten. It has red argon inner I got from a local gear maker in MN, CCS, very soft! The black is some ripstop fabric i got from a local fabric store. I also used these two fabrics to make my first underquilt. A Karo Step summer-ish quilt with 1.5 inch baffles. Its a 60 inch quilt, so my feet need good socks if it does get chilly, otherwise I just pack my down booties and I'm super warm. I'm currently working on my 2nd underquilt which will be a winter weight rated to -15ish according to the underquilt calculator, which has been a huge help!

I started out making kites. It was the reason why I got my sewing machine. Hammocks came later. The first project related to this forum was a hammock with integrated bug net. It was before I became a member. Then came a tarp and since then a few hammocks, 12 to be exact + an unknown number of prototypes. I can’t help myself its some kind of disease.
I actually made a canvas hammock as a kid in the seventies and nearly killed my mom’s sewing machine. One night in the garden and I was cured. Did not know about the cold butt syndrome.
If there is nothing left to learn it’s time to die.
Live and learn.
