Smile video:3 days winter backpacking in Santa Fe.

Priller and I went for a little snowy backpacking trip in the Santa Fe national forest in New-mexico. Lots of fun, not a single soul around. A little more snow than I was expecting on the trail, but our little trail runner shoes did just fine!
Small backpacks, we both scored the six moons design swift on their last year model sale at a bargain. This pack is amazing!!! I was able to get mine down to 13 1/2 pounds base weight (no food or water) for a 3 day trip in 14ºF lows, pretty happy with that.
    It was beautiful and quiet.
14º was a personal best for both Priller and I and I must say we did great and had quite a blast.
Enjoy the video, sorry a little shaky at times, this is my first real movie..

Great video Frenchy!!!! Thanks very much for putting that together.

I have some photos and some one-shot videos to post as well.

So much fun! I would say the only "easy" part of the trip was the weather....getting water, not easy. Getting fire, not so easy....finding trail, not so easy! Pretty cool that you captured our moment of despair haha. Was fun to be in those conditions, and empowering to know how to deal with it (more just the realization that yes my shoes are wet, but I don't need to stop)....going solo is fun, but with a partner it makes plowing thru unfamiliar snowbound trails a little less intimidating.

Dang, 6 hours of walking on Sunday, that was a good stretch!

I am still wearing my Crocs to help my feet and legs recover

I think we need to make this some sort of annual winter hang....

So awesome to do a good weekend like that so early in the year, getting us primed for more to come this year!

Yezzir, we did get wet feet....Frenchy was using some new shoes, and the DWR on his shoes did pretty well, but I think on our long hike out, he said they were in fact wet now. The DWR on my runners are non-existent at the time, woulda been nice to have a little more repellancy (just made up that word haha). Curiously enough, I never had the thought (while hiking), "oh man, my feet are wet and cold, I need to dry them out right away. I think it was because they weren't necessarily cold, which I think is only due to the amount of body heat I was putting off. Everything else around was freezing quickly, like our water, but I never had a problem with my feet....in fact I have had more problems with my feet in the heat of the summer, with the same exact shoes.

Now when we had downtime at camp, we were definitely trying to dry out shoes, socks, insole...

Yeah we were both bummed at ourselves when we realized we didn't have too many detailed rig shots....definitely in the future.

Was a very fun and interesting trip!

When we got up the trails a ways I was afraid that my runners were not gonna be enough, but I'm so glad I wore these instead of boots. Super comfy and only got somewhat wet on the third day due to going down a steep, powdery, river bank to get water. Like Priller said his didn't do quite as well but he was fine. Now I know how far I can push my runners. Great learning experience. If it had been fresh snow it would have been another story!
