Keep your 'eyes peeled' for an early Elna-locally (I've bought a couple, total for both was $60) - they are very nice IMO- real precision machinery aside from the rubber drive wheel- which you already know about with your Kenmore..

The earlier cam Elnas need a cam (I forget the #, but 'mine' didn't come with it) to do zig-zag. Models a bit later (my beige one) in the Supermatic/Super line would do zigzag without an accessory cam, and many other stitches (most decorative) with the appropriate cam.

Of course, there were Singer machines that used cams as well, AFAIK.
I'll start keeping an eye open on my craigslist searches.

Incidentally I took a sample piece over by moms this weekend and showed her that I got it back into fully operational order. She took one look at it and said the stitches are way better then the newer model 14 stitch Kenmore.

I'd lock that one of yours up real tight...Mom is likely to start trying to take it back...

My Singer 401A is equipped with a bunch of cams but since they're really all for fancy embroidery stitches I've never bothered to even play with them...maybe if I was raising little girls in the 50's they would have been in use all the time. Today...not so much!!
