What is the difference between a Straight Taper and Half Taper TQ?

Am wondering what is the difference between a "Straight Taper" and a "Half Taper" TQ? It would be useful if this was somehow made clear on the web site.

Also, what exactly "Sewn Closed" and "Snap Closed" footbox means would be useful to explain on the website.

Straight taper immediately starts tapering down. Half taper stays full width for a length then starts to taper, good for side sleepers and toss n turners. Sewn footbox is sewn closed, snap has snaps that allow you to open it up like a blanket or you can snap it closed to have a footbox.

    Missing information on HG website...

    Hi altruistguy,

My apologies for all the informational gaps in the website right now. I am really trying to get that takin care of. Here is a diagram that somewhat explains the Half taper vs Straight taper design.

    Sewn vs snap closed....

Snap closed: This version of the top quilt is made so that the bottom, or foot end, of the quilt can be opened up so that it lays flat.

    Advantages:
    • Easy to open up for venting if desired
    • easier to drape the quilt around shoulders for extra insulation when "hanging out"
    • Just a bit cheaper

    Disadvantages:
    • Must plug the cinch hole at the end in colder temperatures.
    • Cinching at the end can compress insulation near the cinch hole
    • Just a very small amount heavier

Sewn closed: This version of the top quilt is made with completely different construction technique. It is a continuous baffle system all the way around the the circumference of the footbox. The inner shell of the footbox is only connected to the outer shell with the baffling material that stabilizes the goose down.

    Advantages:
    • No cinch hole to plug
    • Just a little lighter
    • foot box is able to loft more efficiently

    Disadvantages:
    • More difficult to drape over shoulders for "hanging out"
    • a little more expensive
    • Can not vent the footbox

So, again my apologies for the informational gaps. I will make an effort to get those filled in. Thanks everyone!

P.S. Thanks a lot for making me look bad, Fishwater....I posted that back in August! I STILL haven't updated the site....(I hang my head in shame....)

Thanks for the great clarification, StormCrow (and thanks for being a great vendor/manufacturer of great stuff!).

Two more suggestions for when you get around to improving the website:

    - It would be useful to have some means of contacting you on there. Maybe there is such a means now, but I couldn't find it if it is there.

    - It might be useful to include a link to the HammockGear forum here where HG is discussed!
