    CO>MtEvans Echo Lake>Post Superbowl Winter Hang>Feb 7,8,9

Hea Colorado Winter hangers, ready for a winter over nite hang at 11,000ft?

Thru PMs it looks like there is some interest in getting out againt this winter
providing we have good weather and life does not get in the way.

So the plan is Mt Evans at Echo Lake campground the weekend after the Superbowl Feb 7,8,9.
Come for the day hike, one night or the whole weekend. All are welcome.
I would suggest we use the campground next to the road up to the summit of MtEvans.
If the campground road is not plowed there is parking on pavement at EchoLake Lodge a
    stones throw from the CG.

If the weather forecast is bad I like to suggest we just roll the trip to the following weekend.
I don't think anyone wants to do a foul weather survival hang.

I will head up there Friday noonish and plan to stay two nights.

Using snowshoes or microspikes I'd like to try the trail behind the echolake pavilian.
I believe it leads to Chicago Creek which might be a nice place for a hot lunch on the trail.
So a day pack and small cookkit might be worth bringing.

I do have an ice awger if anyone is interested in fishing. Let me know so I
can throw it in the SUV.

The area is pretty picked over for firewood so if you have some please bring it.
A nice group fire Saturday night would be really nice.

Backup hike, up MtEvans road if the trail to Chicago Creek is blocked with too much snow.

    Summer shot Echo Lake

Summer shot. Plenty of hammock trees in the campground.

Summer shot. The trail to Chicago Creek does have some tricky spots think 2-3' of snow.

Summer shot. Views along the trail are very nice.

Summer shot. Saturday day hike destination for a hot lunch. Hopefully.

    ski?

OnB, Would the skinny or fat skis be better for the Mt. Evans Road?
It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so.

I have not been up their this year so I don't know the snow conditions but I would guess skinnies would work best.
The last time I was up there I snowshoed up about 3 miles and did some switchback bombing thru the trees and with soft powder you need the fat ski's.

These are old school 3pin bindings with heel locks.

Oh at ~3 miles up you get an excellent view of Mt Evans.

I'm gonna try to come too. From which direction are you approaching the CG? I assume from Idaho Springs.

Yes but the other way is fine to if that is shorter for you.
They opened a DH ski resort on the East side so the roads are well plowed from either direction.
Will be great to see you again.
Looks like we're getting the band back together.
We just need that skinny boy from NM to join us.

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. Hang your own hammock from them as the winds blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves. - John Muir (you know, all but the hammock part)

General area you may be occupying?
Hoping to see you all there on Saturday.
