Question Whatever happened to the Garlington Taco?

Back before underquilts we had the Garlington Taco. Basically a tarp hung under your hammock, you filled it with leaves or clothing or whatever was handy, and it insulated you.

I know that UQ's work better (down > duff) but the weight and packability was pretty awesome. Am I missing a reason I don't hear about them?

it always seemed to be the next step in the poor-man's upgrade path to get a few more degrees out of the hammock.

(it's hard to justify an UQ when you live in the humid south)

What happened is....You don't have to mess with leaves, etc with an UQ.

While I haven't used leaves in this capacity, I believe down would be warmer.

Still being used by some. The idea wan't to be filled with leaves etc... though that was within the discussion back when we were on the yahoogroups. In general the garlington insulator begins with a shell; what is now commonly referred to as an UQ protector. The insulation can be many things, what seemed to be the best and lightest was a trash bag (or two) with a crumpled space blanket inside and then tied closed. Very little air should be trapped within the bag, just enough to provide space between layers of the space blanket. The garbage bag can double as a pack liner, the shell can be your poncho. In conjunction with some windbumpers, it is amazingly warm, light and minimal volume. It is the trifecta of insulation. Oh I forgot, one of the cheapest alternatives out there too.

If you watch Shug's video at the Frozen Butt Hang, there is one hanger who has a custom system that incorporates this method. He also has some custom UQ tubes that he can swap out depending on the temperature. Pretty slick step up.

I was thinking that this sounded like a UQP.

And frankly, I was considering using my UQP (when I get it in, just ordered one this week) in a similar fashion for summer camping.

My thought was that I could use the UQP, then a PLUQ, wrapped in a space blanket if it was windy/wet out.

And I could add additional items if needed.

I think the current UQ/UQP system is just a Garlington Taco 2.0, when you think about it.

Yep. Still use one above 50º F. No garbage bag for it, though, which limits the temp rating to ~50º (55º-60º for most folks; I'm an human furnace when I sleep). But...I already use a poncho as my rain gear, and it's hard to beat ~0.5 oz of extra weight in under insulation at those temperatures...

I believe DuctTape was just referring to the the UQ protector keeping the wind off the insulation. May have meant to type "wind buffer", but that is just a guess.
