hiking in Maui and Kona Hawaii

I'm taking the family to Hawaii next summer but was looking for ideas now so I could start planning. Since I'm with the whole family and in-laws I won't be doing any hanging, just day hikes here and there. We will probably be going to Maui and Kona. I'm sure there are a bunch but are there any day hikes that stand out that we should do? I really want to see some nice waterfalls, and lush tropical forests. Thanks!

Never been to Maui. Only hiking I have done was in Volcano. It was awesome, but bring your rainwear if you are able to get over there from Kona. Constantly mists up top, but if you follow the road down the volcano toward the coast within the park, the weather clears and I think there are some pretty sweet hikes. Not rainforest though, that's back up by the volcano. Rains a lot in Kona too where the coffee farms are, but the northern part where the resorts start, the weather is fabulous. I am now realizing that I thought I had something useful to contribute, but this basically doesn't help you much if you are looking to stay and hike right in Kona. Sorry.

"Hawaii the Big Island Revealed" is a pretty good guidebook, though it seems like everywhere you go he is warning that something can kill you, so just be aware. It might help you find some day hikes though.

I've visited and hiked on both islands. Take the drive south to Volcano NP from Kona and there is plenty of day hiking to enjoy.

Maui has a ton of hiking and camping but the best we found was in Hana which is a days drive from most of the resorts. There you will have unlimited access to waterfalls and crystal clear pools as well as miles of bamboo and rain forest.

Im from oahu but rarely go to the other islands. There is a free app i use called alltrails. I have no doubt youll find great hikes in the area with this app. I use it back home and i can filter out what type of hikes i want to go on down to features, distance and difficulty. Just of course be respectful to the island and bring some mosquito repellent! If i dont use it on waterfall hikes ill get eaten alive! And be prepared to get muddy

Haleakala on Maui is a must see. Absolutely amazing.

Not hiking, but in Kona a must do is snorkeling/diving with the manta rays. I can't get enough of this and I'm local.

watch out for centipedes. Shake out your boots, sleeping bag, hammock etc. every time you use them. I've heard getting shot hurts less.
