Noob wanting to sew some pullouts onto a tarp

    Hi everyone,

I love my WB Cloudburst tarp but want to add some pullouts to enable doors.

Before I screw it up, what should I know before I start work?

    Needle type/size?
    Thread type?

I have to ask, what's wrong with using the existing tie outs?

Oops not tieouts, guy line loops

Sorry, the tarp has side tieouts, I meant D-ring pullouts on the bottom. The CB only has them at the corners.

I'm sorry, but are you asking about adding guyline attachment points at the bottom of the tarp? Or are you asking about adding side pulls to prevent the tarp from sagging?

If you're sewing the former, add a hemispherical or rectangular reinforcement patch (2" to 4" in size, probably), using 200d coated nylon, to the back of the area that you're sewing your grosgrain to; this will help spread the force of the guyline over a greater area and reduce the likelihood of your tarp ripping. I wouldn't worry about seam sealing in this case; it's going to be low enough on the tarp that the occasional drip isn't going to touch your hammock any more than blow-under would.

If you're sewing the latter, add a circular reinforcement patch (same size and material) behind the area that you're sewing the grosgrain to. In this case, I would take the time to seam seal; it's going to be high enough that it might drip on you during the night.

Either of them will use a Microtex (aka Sharp) needle with good-quality 100% polyester thread. Make sure that you use a needle large enough that you can thread the eye with the thread you choose. Personally, I've found a Schmetz Microtex in 10/70 size with Gutermann Mara thread works well for me. YMMV, though.

    Hope it helps!

    Bottom

The ones on the bottom. The CB already has side pullouts.

    Thanks FLRider!

I still don't understand what needs added. My photo in post #2 shows a WB Cloudburst with DIY doors attached to the bottom corner D-ring, the side pull out D-ring and the ridgeline tie out loop.

I may be totally wrong but it seems like he wants to add guyout points on the bottom edge of the tarp so that he may stake those out and then fold his "doors" together. I don't think he actually wants to add a door kit. But again I could be wrong.

Your DIY door kit is awesome btw
