    What Temp UQ

The majority of my hammock camping takes place in the shoulder seasons here in Ontario (spring and fall) where temps can get down to -7 degrees Celsius or so. I do a lot of winter camping but have never used a hammock, but would like to give it a shot.

If I were to get an under quilt, would you suggest I get one rated for 4 season use, based on when I would normally use it? I do tend to get cold when I sleep.

I guess my concern is if I get a winter rated UQ, will I roast if I use it any other time of year? Would it be a ridiculous thought to use it in the summer (i.e. can they be loosened off to vent, etc?)

    Your input is appreciated!

    Hey there,
There are some that do vent their 0º UQ in warmer weather by sliding it up toward their head to create a gap or just push it off to the side and pull it under in the wee hours when one starts to feel the cold.
It is tough to have just one UQ to cover a wide range of temps for camping but is doable.

Thanks Shug...I think you're right...kinda like buying a winter mummy bag and hoping to use it in the summer...probably not the wisest or most practical of ideas lol

Cold sleeper, cold climate, below freezing in shoulder seasons and a desire to do more winter camping. Go straight for a 0F UQ!

I'm in a warmer climate than you, I intend to see how warm I can push the 0F UQ that I just built by switching out TQs and venting. That UQ actually calculates out to -teens.

You're reply just summed up exactly what I am thinking...thank you

I've been looking at the option of adding a 2QZQ UQ Protector as well and the possibility of just using that in the summer months to keep the cool breezes off my arse end!

With where you live I dont think you can go wrong with a 0 degree. As for the 2QZQ UQP, fantastic item. Chances are good that you will end up with a few UQ before long Enjoy!!

Ya I can see how one would start to want one for all seasons...Kind of like my sleeping bag addiction

Quick question about the UQP... would you suggest the breathable version or the waterproof version?

    Camping in the Rockies & it's cold up there. I use a 20* UQ with a 0*TQ.
Have the 2QZQ that's breathable and I keep it on all year.
    Sub zero F, I'd go with a 0* UQ.
Bulk becomes the issue with both quilts 0* rated and trying to get them packed with my rig. I have my hammock, quilts, protector and bug net together in a single compression sack for quick deployment.

Breathable for sure... waterproof will block moisture coming off of you! and i've heard stories of moisture collecting in a pool inside a silnylon UQP. Even the breathable ones should have a DWR finish that does a good job of shedding splash up and deflecting wind.

    I have:
    o 0F UQ
    o double-layer of reflectex pad
    o 0F TQ
    o 20F TQ
    Here's how I use them:
    > below 0deg (Rocky Mountains), all 4 items.
    > 0-32F, 0F UQ and 0F TQ
    > 32-40F, 0F UQ and 20F TQ
    > 40-60F, reflectex pad and 20F TQ
    > >60F, reflectex pad and 32F IMSS intermediate bag

A lot depends on how much you like to wear when you sleep. The less the better for me. That's why I tend to use higher rated (for warmth) equipment than conditions would appear to dictate. YMMV
